Default sound help please

help i dont have the manual for my surround sound kit so i was wondering if you can help me.

im running an ps3 and i have just started to use my surround sound kit again but i dont know if it supports uncompressed pcm(to be honest i dont realy understand sound to much i just like to hear the best i can) now i tell the disc to play the pcm track and it does output sound but the dolby track seems to sound much better and i thought it should be the other way around.so i just wanted to know if my player did not support pcm would any sound come from speakers?

to be honest the dolby tracks sound much better than there dvd counterparts but i just want to know if my kit supports it.(cant find a model no on kit)

Let me guess-- are you using the optical out on your PS3 to your receiver?

If so, then you cannot do 5.1 or 7.1 lossless (LPCM or TrueHD). TOSLINK will only support 2.0 channels of LPCM. So if you are using this, then you are only hearing a downmixed 2.0 LPCM track when you set your PS3 to output LPCM. The DD track (and DTS tracks) that you can bitstream to your receiver via optical will generally sound better than the 2.0 LPCM as you will have discrete surrounds and LFE tracks added to the 2.0 track.

you want an HDMI capable receiver.

This would be the best start...

Onkyo TX-SR605
(£399.00)

HDMI v1.3
7.1PCM
Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD Master decoding

Only way to get Multi-channel Lossless is via Multichannel Analog inputs or via an HDMI cable.

Well, HDMI out of your PS3 would be optimum, but you would need a new receiver that has HDMI inputs and will process (not pass through) audio via HDMI (1.3a is the latest spec). For the receiver that you seem to be describing, assuming that it has optical (TOSLINK) inputs, then that is your best bet in connecting your PS3 to that bit of kit. The limitations mentioned above will apply to this connection.

There are wireless rigs for surround speakers around, but I don't know how good they really are-- I am a hardwire type guy myself; I just take to running the wire through the wall when at all possible.

so does the hdmi go from ps3 to reciver then from reciver to tv?

also just checked out the price i know you get what you pay for but is there anything a bit more entry level about half that £200
