It's quoting Richard not Ebert. Richard did like it. I think you're reading it as "Two Thumbs Up" and its just Richard's "Thumbs Up" lol.

P.S I like this movie, extremely underrated.

Yeah, I updated my post to eliminate the confusion in how I originally wrote it. It's just hilarious to me that they would advertise it as "thumbs up", which should signal to anyone familiar with the format, that the other person thumbed it down

It's nothing new though. I've seen that happen a lot of times in covers. They can either use their famous "Two Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Up" from just one of them even if the other one didn't like it. I've seen it in other covers now I don't remember which one.

I've never seen just "thumbs up" personally, but it's really its use on a movie where Ebert gave it his lowest rating, which he's only done for a handful of movies, that makes it funnier/odder to me.

I remember reading it right when it was published, and I just couldn't believe it. I hadn't seen a zero star review from him before that, so it was just shocking. I saw the movie a few years later, and his rating just made no sense to me. I feel his review influenced other critics, and perhaps the views of the general audience to an extent back then too. I'm willing to bet if this came out in theaters today, there would be a more positive reaction to it.

He also gave TCM 2003 zero stars. He was harsh that year.
