One thing to keep in mind, this was a two-strip Techniclor, one of the earliest films to be done in color, so do not expect gorgeous Technicolor of later films.

This is one of my favorite silents -- one of the first I bought on DVD too. Awesome.

A little giddy with this news... Kino

I've never actually seen this one. Will be picking it up though. Really glad to be getting these older films in HD.

I hope they delve more into the 1930s and 1940s. There are SO MANY classic titles to do still.

LOL, I have been wondering if how quickly a new title's mention drops off the main page down to page 2 in just 24 hours indicates how poorly it will do in Blu sales? I want The Black Pirate and so do a select number of others, but I am surprised a 1926 classic would have that little interest. Or that everything else would have more interest. Ha ha, I even saw at a few points in the last day that Tim Conway and Don Knotts in The Private Eyes was garnering more attention.

I am not too surprise about it. Silent movies only attract a certain amount of attention when release for home, even more so in theaters. Most people could not be bothered with silent movies, they would find them boring, the acting over the top and cheesie and too old to watch. It's alright really, not forcing anyone to like anything they would not care to see. Only trouble is the lack of interest sort of make it difficult for KINO and others to spend so much money on restauration and releases of such movies

If you are wondering what two-strip Technicolor looks like, here is a picture I just took of the DVD version of The Black Pirate:

I saw a couple Paramount 2 Strip Technicolor films a few years back at a local theatre that were borrowed I believe from the UCLA film library. One title was called Follow Through.

Think of the Scorsese's AVIATOR during the early film scenes. That was the look they were aiming for that angered a few people. They didn't get what he was doing.

I wonder how much restoration work is actually done on the silent movies Kino releases. I was impressed by the HD visuals of movies like The General and Steamboat Bill Jr but it's also obvious after just a few seconds that no restoration software was used to get rid of the specks and scratches. These movies could look even better but a small company like Kino doesn't t have the funds to do a frame by frame restoration. Disney and Warner can afford to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their crown jewels, Kino can't do the same with relatively obscure silent movies that will only sell to a small audience of film fans.

All the more reason to support Kino and purchase their releases! Hopefully in a couple of years this will only be a footnote in bringing silent film into the HD era!

For movies that are 80+ years old, they look wonderful. I think Kino as done a master job of them. As for bigger companies, I doubt they would bother doing much restoration on silent movies, they could not see much of a return. The reality is that silent movies only attract a very small amount of the people buying movies for home viewing. I doubt very much a company with more money and able to make a even greater restoration would make that much more sales. The problem is not the quality of the imagine but the fact that these just cannot attract Joe Wall-Mart.
