Thomas K. Arnold of Home Media Magazine writes: Is the future of Hollywood in the grasp of two computer companies? Sadly, it is so. If this format war continues on much longer, we could be in repeat of what happened in the music industry. We saw two next-generation formats, Super CD and DVD-Audio, battle it out, and in the end neither won-leaving the tired, old CD to fend for itself in an increasingly electronic environment.
Toshiba and Microsoft, by stubbornly continuing to back HD DVD at a point where it is clear that the format cannot longer win, are threatening to derail the entire home entertainment packaged-media business - Hollywood's primary cash cow, and as such, a vital bloodline to the creation of new movies. Toshiba needs to swallow its pride and do the right thing for our industry - and, in the long term if not the short term, its own corporate shareholders. The same goes for Microsoft, which at least has opened the door to Blu-ray in a series of cryptic statements issued just after Warner made the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it would exclusively support Blu-Ray Disc. If Microsoft goes Blu - or atleast issues a Blu-ray add-on for its Xbox 360, as it has for HD DVD -then Toshiba will likely cave as well. Hopefully one or both companies will see the light before it gets dark for all of us. At the top where it says contents, the left side of the page, this news is on page seven. http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom012708/ Sorry if this is old. The date says it's from today, but you never know around here. Speedy posters and all. ![]() |

HD-DVD backers should have packed it a day on HD-DVD when they first checked out the two formats.
Ain't my fault they're either blind or stupid {I have no idea which} to the fact that one side had the majority of support and the other didn't. Logan |

...they should really just concentrate on making good TV's, and stop with all this BS. It's hurting everyone. Why can't they see this? And why hasn't Hollywood stepped in by now? To be damned sure that someone can get a fire lit under that ass! |

I am pretty sure the cell processor in the PS3 is made by Toshiba so if you buy a PS3 you will be giving your money to Toshiba!

Isn't this the second week in a row that an article from Home Media Magazine asking HD DVD to throw in the towel.
Why don't they take the next step and refuse any HD DVD advertisements ![]() |

Have you seem some of the flaming hatred posts from the HD-DVD "usual suspects" over at HDD and other sites? The majority of them would rather do without high def media all together than drop their precious HD-DVD. Upon the Warner announcement, they already shifted their allegiances to Microsoft's download services. Direct quote:
"People said MP3 music downloads would never take off, and look what happened. Just wait, internet downloads are the future. F*** Sony and anti-consumer Blu-Ray. BD winning means the consumer losing and fatter pocketbooks for Sony. I can't wait until Microsoft makes Blu-Ray obsolete." There obviously are some people who are in the market strictly to enjoy high-def media, but unfortunately these flaming HD-DVD backers that actually think Toshiba="pro-consumer" will never go away. All I can say is enjoy your featureless, slow, inferior downloads. Once a loser always a loser, I suppose. |

There are certainly red supporters who will never cross over to the blu side, a least in the public eye.
They will continue to hold the stance of never surrender. |
