Hallelujah!!!! This film is absolutely gorgeous, I saw it twice. Once when it was first released last December for Oscar consideration in NY and LA, and again when it was re-released for its general release in May, with a Branagh Q & A.
It's only getting a DVD release in many other markets, like the UK, and I was terrified that would be the case here too. Super excited to see it's coming to BD!!!! The photography is exquisite in this film, lots of scenes set in historic homes lit only by candlelight, and also beautiful views of the English countryside. The film itself is a brilliantly imagined portrait of Shakespeare's later years. I will offer a tiny bit of caution though, it helps a lot to know at least the basics of his life and those times, the film is very much made for Shakespeare buffs, it's not like Shakespeare in Love, aimed at a mass audience, it assumes a fair amount of knowledge. If you have that, however, I can almost guarantee you'll love it, as I did! ![]() |

It's a miracle we're getting a BD, it's one of the few released anywhere for this title. There was never a chance of a 4K, I think the only Sony Classics title to ever get a 4K was Crouching Tiger, and that's a fluke outlier box office behemoth among their titles.

Oddballs ones like this will come to Blu ray eventually.
Little Hours was DVD only for about a year and so was Death of Stalin; regretted buying both on DVD because I could not wait. Mind you, PQ on DVD was still very good. I want to watch this but I could wait for the BD/4K. |

I'm not sure what you mean about Death of Stalin. It is still DVD-only in the US. I had to import the region-locked British BD.

I haven't checked the disc, but the back cover says it is region free.

Since there's no review for this disc, I thought I'd provide more detailed info on the fairly extensive bonus features:
- "Q&A with Kenneth Branagh" - 33:47 hosted by Jenelle Riley of Variety - "Shakespeare Comes Home" - 3:06 EPK piece outlining the film's premise - "The Bard's Reckoning" - 3:15 EPK piece focusing on Dench, McKellen and Branagh - "Visiting Stratford: The Story Behind All Is True" - 8:25 featurette produced by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust interviewing various historians about the historical suppositions in the film - "Behind the Scenes: Becoming Shakespeare" 1:38 EPK piece about Branagh's makeup/prosthetics - "Behind the Scenes: Judi Dench" 1:32 EPK piece about Dench's connection to her role - "Behind the Scenes: Ian McKellen" 1:33 EPK piece about McKellen's connection to his role - "Behind the Scenes: Fact or Fiction" 1:54 EPK piece about the historical basis for the ideas in the film - "Behind the Scenes: A Family Drama" 1:24 EPK piece about the family dynamics in the film - Theatrical Trailer 2:26 |

Is this a BD-R? Or a pressed disc? The liner artwork is certainly laser-printed, but the disc itself, though it has generic white artwork, looks professional enough. It doesn't look like a DVD-R on the back. All the Warner Archive MOD BDs I have are pressed, I believe, and these Sony ones don't look all that different. But maybe I just don't know what to look for. If you can help explain the difference, that would be great, thanks!

Since these niche titles would never get a physical release otherwise, I'm more than happy with this format, which is the same as Warner Archive and Universal use for their MOD Blu-Rays. |
