Default Wolf Creek (Uncut) - 31 May 2023 - Via Vision

Quote:
NUMBER OF BLU-RAY DISCS
2

RELEASE DATE
31 May 2023

RUNTIME (IN MINUTES)
98 / 104

1000 COPIES ONLY! INCLUDES BOTH THE THEATRICAL AND UNCUT VERSIONS OF THE FILM.

Inspired by Australia’s most gruesome true crime stories, writer/producer/director Greg McLean has created a benchmark of modern horror, unflinching in its brutality and devastating in its psychological impact.

Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) is an outback force – a loner, a larrikin, and an expert hunter. For years he hunted wild boars for a living but now he has switched to a different beast – tourists being his speciality. Mick greets his prey with a wry smile and a laid back charm, lures them back to his remote campsite… and shuttered from the prying eyes of the world, carries out acts of unspeakable horror. Mick Taylor kills for fun, but never quickly.

Young backpackers, Kristy (Kestie Morassi), Liz (Cassandra Magrath) and Ben (Nathan Phillips) have just met Mick at Wolf Creek National Park. He’s promised to fix their broken down car after towing it back to his camp. What they are about to experience is to look into the eyes of a cold blooded killer who knows no mercy.

You’ve heard people talk about the effect of this film had on them, now it’s time for you to travel to Wolf Creek yourself. Mick Taylor still hunts there.

The Ultimate Edition collection includes both the Theatrical and Unrated cuts of the film, bonus features, and 6 art cards.

1000 copies only – individually numbered!
Special Features and Technical Specs:

Audio Commentary with Greg McLean, Matt Hearn, Cassandra Magrath and Kestie Morassi

This (to me at least) is a huge deal - evident by the fact that I'm making a thread but can't find the excitement in me to bother with threads for Imprint announcements anymore.

What do they mean 'uncut' version of the film?

The film was R rated and to my knowledge nothing was cut to obtain that rating, unless they released it later in an MA version?

Or have they just added extras footage to this?

It's more like an extended version, already been released on DVD in the US and France. I could've sworn the old local DVD was the longer cut but apparently not (long purged from my collection so I can't check it either). There's no extra nasty stuff, just 2 additional scenes that do bugger all other than make the film longer.

I've had a look at the Australian Classification site and there's no record of a version of Wolf Creek beyond the R18+ version. No alternate versions, no versions that were RC'd, nothing. The only thing that I could find was that on the Wolf Creek wikipedia page, it talks about an extra 5 minutes that were cut from the film in post-production. So maybe that's what this "unrated" version is? In this case it wouldn't exactly be unrated, it would just be extended. This seems most likely since these extra scenes were released on a US Blu-ray as an "unrated cut".

Ripped from Wikipedia, if you're interested here are the scenes:
[Show spoiler]The original cut of Wolf Creek ran 104 minutes; however, 5 minutes of the film were excised in post-production. The surplus footage in this cut included an additional scene at the beginning of the film after the party sequence, in which Kristy awakens in bed next to Ben at a beach cottage the following morning; this created a romantic subplot between the characters, and was cut from the film for "complicating" matters unnecessarily.

The other additional footage took place when Liz returns to the mining site after leaving Kristy behind; rather than immediately entering the car garage, as she does in the theatrical cut, she finds a revolver and fills it with cartridges, and then explores an abandoned mine shaft in order to search for Ben. She subsequently drops her pistol into the shaft, and climbs down inside to find dozens of decomposing bodies. This explains why, in the theatrical cut, the revolver disappears after she enters the car garage. According to McLean, this scene was cut from the film after test screenings because it was "simply too much", along with all of the other gruesome events that had taken place prior.

It's cool this is being released and put back into print as I love the movie but geez Via Vision make it hard with insisting on these expensive limited edition releases for films you can pretty easily acquire elsewhere cheaper. If they included the second film then maybe it would have been a good buy but I can't see much of a reason to buy this when I already have the original Roadshow release.

Also, wonder why the Lionsgate logo is on the discs Blu-ray and press release. I'm surprised that Lionsgate has picked up the rights from Roadshow if they sold them away, especially considering Lionsgate didn't have any role in distributing the film anywhere prior?

A lot of "unrated" cuts are just extended. Films don't require a rating in the US - it's only really due to a cultural stigma that associates anything rated higher than an R with porn - so any alternate version can easily just be distributed on disc without one.

Lionsgate must have brought up the rights for the US (previously it was with the W**stein company, eww) so I'd assume VV just licensed it from them, with zero involvement from Roadshow who's rights to it have obviously lapsed or been forfeited.

Would like to order this from the US, but VV wants $30 for international shipping...to ship a blu ray. Surely seems like there is some cheaper option out there for them to ship outiside AUS but that is the only option I'm seeing. I can't justify that for any blu.

I'm not feeling much love for the Australian companies of late which is disappointing as I used to spend a fair amount of coin purchasing their releases.

2 unnecessary discs of the film ..... never heard of branching.

I would love to support Australian labels more but 60 bucks is getting a bit much.

I'm definitely getting it, but being $60 USD ($40 + $20 shipping) I'm going to have to wait another week until payday. With only 1,000 copies, I wonder if Diabolik DVD, Grindhouse Video, or Orbit DVD will be getting any?

Sounds like a lot of marketing nonsense to me. In Australia it is illegal to release a film without it obtaining a rating from the OFLC first. As one of the other commenters have said, apart from the original R18+ rating, nothing has been resubmitted or re-rated recently by the OFLC. Sounds like they're trying to pander to the U.S. market with the term "unrated" to sell copies. At $60 they're certainly taking the piss. I will also stick to my Roadshow release.

I had the same thought.

I doesn't even appear to feature a new transfer, so I presume it will just be a re-release of whatever is already available, stuffed in a nice box with some repro cards.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered too. Saved the extra $13 it would have cost to order from Via Vision.
