Question Can Blu-ray be improved?

I have had many people where I work if something better than Blu-ray can be invented and I said it can but our generation won't be around to see it. The guy asked me what I meant and I told him the technology in Blu-ray is so far advanced that it will take a very very long time to even think of a way to improve it. Am I wrong about that? The way I'm starting to see it, if someone wants to see a more clear picture than 1080p, wouldn't they need an HDTV so big it wouldn't be worth it? To many consumers, can a more clear picture than 1080p be noticeable to the naked eye, or is full Blu-ray full 1080p the best it will be for a good 40-50 years? Is Blu-ray our generations improved video technology or will we be around to see it get even better?

It's not just TV size, the pixels can also get smaller... so you can get resolutions higher than 1080p on smaller TV's.

I do ask these questions because the guy I was talking with said he was thinking about waiting until something else that's better than Blu-ray comes and then he will invest in that. Can it really get any better?

If he's prepared to wait... yes.

However by then (if he hasn't already) he may have a bald patch, white hair, middle age spread or any other symptom of the ageing process that you may care to mention.

my answer to that would be: Why should I wait for future technology when I can enjoy present technology now? I'll enjoy future technology when we get there...

Dude. Anything can be improved upon. Samsung is building a plant to make TV's with a resolution of 2000x 4000p. That's nuts! Course, said plant won't be around till ten years or so. In fourty or fifty years, games and movies could very well be played in 3D. Don't know about that last part, though. I'm just talking out of my ass. But fifty years changes things a lot.

Even if you can get a TV and a HDM that does better, which you will, broadcast TV still has a way to go. Which has a major roll....

Size does not matter, but ratio does (i.e. why you need more pixels per inch then on your TV). Will there be something better then BD? who knows, but let's face it the past has shown us there is always something better (even if it is there for no other reason then to pick our pockets again). I don't think that anyone (CEs or studios) is interested at going beyond 1080p for homes. But at the same token, will there be other stuff? maybe some must have extras (no idea what they can be nor why BD won't handle it), maybe 3D (OK, in theory I think it could be BD) or maybe something else (we all saw sci-fi movies where it is a crystal, maybe a disk that is a fraction of the size.....)

Indeed. Most broadcasts are still 720p. It's great for sports. Some, like Discovery Cinema HD, which kicks ass BTW, is 1080i. To my knowledge, I don't think their is a single broadcast that runs in 1080p. Could be wrong, though.

Yes. Holographic storage. Tell him to have plenty of patience unless he has $15,000 to buy a player. Of course there are no movies available on the format.

Take him to see a good Blu-ray demo and ask him what else is he waiting for?

Yes, bluray can get way better.

If you compare dvds that were considered reference material from 1997-2000 those dont BEGIN to hold a candle to what was considered reference material from 2003-2007.

However, I dont expect the improvement to be quite as dramatic since the mastering process has improved dramatically since 1997.

you can always wait, that is the problem. why buy VHS, there could be something better (and there was), why but DVD there could be something better (and there is)..... BD is just starting, it will most likely be the format for the next 10 years (at the least) is he willing to live with out quality today because in 10 years there might be something better? The real issue is that chances are that before that something better comes along he will be forced to BD (VHS went out before BD came out) so all he is doing is postponing the inevitable, not to forget that he will also deprive himself for all those years he waits for that something better and will have BD for less time.

One serious improvement would be to the aspect ratio. Instead of 16:9 (1920 X 1080), if this was increased as follows:-
  • 2:1 (2160 x 1080) or
  • 2.35:1 (2538 x 1080)

That would be a great bonus. At 2.35:1 there would be no more matting and a full 1080 pixels of vertical resolution would be visible. This would probably need the 100GB BD running at maybe 4x speed.

PS. Whatever happened to the 100GB BD???

4K displays and Holographic discs.

As far as this generation, I'm looking forward to 200gb Blu-ray discs.

Current Blu-ray discs can be improved by improving the codes used to encode the movies. The end result is still the same the codec needs to be played on a Blu-ray player, but a codec such as AVS can be refined to give a more accurate encode of the original.

You make a very good point with that, saying that eventually he will be forced to buy Blu-ray because in 5-7 years DVD will become what VHS is today. I also like the idea that technology will always change so there isn't really anything to invest in permanently because eventually something will come out that tops the lastest products. I'm sure within about 5 years people will start to expect something better to be out anyway, or at least have a good idea of what could come out to top Blu-ray. THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S HELP!

Blu-ray will be it on the consumer level for a decade at least. The limiting thing is the display and most haven't even switched to HDTV yet.

There is a lot of improvment within blu-ray that's yet untapped. That's the main advantage of blu-ray over HD-DUD which has no where to go but out. There will eventually be something better, technology continues to advance but I see a good 10 year run before blu-ray's potential runs it's course.
