Question Wireless Audio

I currently only have a Samsung HT-TQ72 home theater system hooked up to an upconverting DVD player. Each speaker is connected to the DVD player with wires but I have the option of having 2/5 speakers wireless.

So I was just wondering if there are any audio sound systems/home theater systems that are completely wireless? If so, which are best for the Blu Ray? I am also completely oblivious to what 5.1 and 7.1 channels mean and also whether Dolby True HD or PCM is better.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I, personally, would never recommend wireless speakers. They have been pretty consistent with weak performance in my opinion.

An explanation of "5.1": the first number, in this case 5, means 5 speakers. The ".1" means subwoofer. So in the case of 5.1 it means 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer. The five speakers are consisted on a center channel (dialouge) and your front speakers and surround speakers. In a 7.1 setup you would have a center speaker, two front speakers, two surround speakers, and two rear speakers. Most tracks on Blu-ray do not have 7.1.

I have a somewhat related question related to wireless audio.

I've been looking at getting one of the following:

1. logitech squeezebox $299
2. roku media bridge $139
3. onkyo wireless $139

Both the squeezebox and roku run through an ethernet set up. Does internet usage become problamatic (slow down) because I'm running the systems through it?

Does the audio quality suffer in any of these systems? I go through the painstaking and slow task of ripping at WAV lossless and don't want to lose out on quality.

Do I have to do anything on my computer to get a proper signal out or does the receiver handle it?

If it matters, I have an Onkyo 705.

Thanks!

There is a lot of good advice availible on this forum, and hopefully some others will pick up this thread.
You didn't mention what TV you have, but if it is a 1080P unit, I recommend the following.
Start building a good component system.
Get a HDMI capable receiver (like Sony's STR-DG810 $318 at Abt Electronics) and connect to the Blu-ray player & tv via HDMI cables. You don't need the overpriced Monster Cables, go to monoprice.com for some good, inexpensive, HDMI cables.
Use your Sony speakers temporarily, or get something like the Boston Acoustics MCS100 or 130 speaker systems (Amazon.com $350 & up), which are complete 5.1 systems with subwoofer & cable.
The important thing is PLAN YOUR SYSTEM, AND FOLLOW THE PLAN!

Not directly to a Blu-ray player. You would have to buy a receiver unit to act as mediary unit for your home theatre. Essentially, what the "receiver" does is that it takes in all video and audio feeds from every component in your home theatre setup and passes it to the appropriate area. It will send all video to your TV through 1 cable (maybe 2 depending on the receiver capabilities). And, likewise, it will send all of the audio to your surround speakers. So, your Blu-ray player, DVD player, gaming consoles, CD player, VCR, HD DVD player, and any other piece of equipment you might have would connect to the receiver. Then, the receiver would have the speakers wires connected to it and 1 or 2 cables from it connected to the TV for the video.

I hope that this helps. I think that I started to get lost in my own explanation.

So with these recievers you merely use HDMI cables to connect the player and TV (and any other entertainment system)? Do these receivers allow for wireless audio and if so how is the quality?

Sorry for the "beginner" questions but I am not too familar with home theatre systems.
