I've been doing a lot of set-up in my home theatre lately mainly calibrating my sound system and projector and that involves going through a fair amount of test films (usually something random on Netflix or Prime Video) but the majority of the time, I always go through my physical collection and pick out a few demo discs to help me out. What qualifies as a demo disc? A Blu-ray that's the peak of home entertainment, top rate sight and sound, practically theatre quality. Some demo discs I tend to use the most are Avatar, The Tree of Life, Eraserhead, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Then, I got to thinking, what are the greatest pieces of physical media? Not just in terms of PQ + AQ but in terms of bonus features, commentaries, and behind the scenes footage. So if I had to pick a handful of the greatest Blu-ray's (etc.) of all time, I'd likely go with the Alien Anthology, 2001, Eraserhead, The Exorcist, and Jurassic Park. Now, I'd like to hear from anyone else willing to toss their hat into the ring. What are some of the best physical media releases of all time?

Some that come to mind for me personally are Blade Runner: The Final Cut 4K, Blade Runner 2049 4K, Midsommar Director's Cut 4K, and the Japanese import of Akira 4K. These are all absolutely fantastic in a variety of ways and I'm thrilled to own them.

Whenever I want to show off my 4K TV (LG CX), I put on the Ascot race scene from My Fair Lady on the UHD disc.
It's an absolutely astounding 4K master from a 70mm negative. It blows away even other 70mm films on UHD, like Spartacus. The detail and color are mind blowing. I usually play a bit of that scene from the ancient DVD first, to heighten the contrast. ![]() Last edited by James Luckard; 10-18-2021 at 06:21 PM. |

Only the 3D BD used the new 4K scan, I think, but it's smoothed to Madame Tussaud's levels, since it's 3D. Even the UHDs of Jurassic Park and The Lost World look like very old transfers, sadly. Last edited by James Luckard; 10-18-2021 at 07:54 PM. |
