The first step is to convince Russell that it's worth licensing. Then - when the license is secured - we have to see if left/right scans would be made available in order for us to create a 3-D master. This can be done but the first step is to get Panamint behind it.

I have no idea if it's a good film—in fact, I'm kinda skeptical that it is, given the subject and the era—but I would happily buy Sirk in 3D nonetheless!

I don't want to be a dark cloud, but Taza has already been released in 2D by a German label (Region B). Hopefully, that doesn't dissuade Russell and Panamint from considering a 3-D release.

Vintage 3-D is currently lacking in the Western genre despite plenty of titles to choose from. Currently, Western fans only have Comin' At Ya! to turn to for creature comfort. More diversity is sorely needed.

I know what you mean, but Comin at Ya! is a spaghetti western made in Europe that is hardly a western in style or content. It doesn't count.

Taza Son of Cochise digs deep and honestly into Anglo-Indian conflict. For every inaccurate detail, there is an accurate generality. Cochise worked hard to achieve peace, which did not sit well with all his warriors. His sons were in conflict, and took different sides when he died. Geronimo wanted to fight, and did he ever. Those generalities are accurate. Navajos and Apaches are cast and paid as background extras and as horsemen. They must have had input into costumes and props, which are uncommonly vivid and accurate. The film details social customs and infighting among the tribe, which is also accurate up to a point. The film illustrates how a warrior tribe was asked to become farmers and herders, which they weren't really. No mere spag was ever aware of such issues, nor did a spag ever explore such emotional dynamics. Taza Son of Cochise is a real American western, shot within a mere hundred miles of where the history actually happened. It may not be great history but it's closer to history than Hollywood usually came in its heyday.

The film is under-rated. It just begs to be re-evaluated.

Are the rest of Universal's catalog pictures (The Glass Web, Wings of the Hawk, Revenge of the Creature) also options for Panamint?

Universal's titles are open for licensing to 3rd parties in Europe through Hollywood Classics. Hollywood Classics is how Panamint acquired Inferno from Fox.

Here in the states, the only 3rd parties that seem to have a regular licensing agreement with Universal is Criterion and TCM Vault.

I would certainly buy it regardless. Just today I received more classic 3D movies in the mail, one of which is in a genre I'm not that big on at all - musical.

I now own The Mask 3D, Jaws 3D and Kiss Me, Kate. I just watched Kiss Me, Kate this afternoon and loved the 3D effects. It was a spectacular restoration. The sound and image were great.

After reading through this thread, I sent an encouraging email to Panamint. Hopefully it helps.

Other classic 3D movies I'd love to see on Blu-ray include Revenge of the Creature, Phantom of the Rue Morgue and Gorilla at Large. I am supremely confident that ROTC will be coming out soon, with Universal starting to release its classic monster sets on Blu-ray. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if our friend Robert Furmanek possesses some knowledge on this but is unable to share it.

Another one I'd love to see and never saw in any format is Second Chance. From the poster, it looks really exciting and has stars I really like.

I agree that Taza is a superior film and deserves a 3-D Blu-Ray release far more than Comin' At Ya! does.

However, the copyright owners and distributors of Comin' At Ya! should still be commended for releasing a 3-D Blu-Ray of a Western that's more than 30 years old. Nobody had done it before they did and hopefully it will inspire other copyright owners and distributors to release Golden Age 3-D westerns sometime in the near future.

Don't give up on 3-D, Russell Cowe. You performed a minor miracle with Inferno and in so doing earned the respect and loyalty of 3-D enthusiasts. I know that Universal can be a jerk but it's about the films not the studio execs. Do give it another try.

When I first saw the thread title I was getting excited thinking this was getting a release. I guess I'll never see this one in 3D. It was released on Sensio DVD.

I second this. I was dismayed when the release of It Came From Outer Space was cancelled, it would have been a much better release than the one we're getting.

It seems like nobody cares sometimes but just over 300 people raised over $30,000 because they wanted to see September Storm on 3D blu ray, and that's a film nobody really ever heard of...

Pictorially Taza Son of Cochise is one of the most impressive westerns of the 1950s, and that's saying a lot. Dramatically it is a mature and sophisticated work. Historically it is not entirely without merit; one might say it's ahead of its time. After two screenings today not even Rock Hudson seems like the obstacle he used to be. I'm totally under the spell of this beautiful, intimate, rugged western.
