Default MS cuts price on the Xbox HD DVD add-on

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/06/a...vds-and-shipp/

With 6 movies! How is anyone making money on this deal? This is surely a stock clearance move, or does anyone know if Amazon are still taking on stock.

I can't believe how much money Toshiba are throwing away on their format right now, it's incredible, or a very risky move to get hardware into homes and hope that some decent new titles show up soon! It's all very well getting a player into a house, but when the owner realises there is little or nothing new worth buying...

It's already back to $179.99. Must have been a quick sale.

The EngadgetHD article has been updated with this:

Quote:
Update: Nice, you broke Amazon -- they're sold out.
I just hope that means sold out forever with no stock EVER coming in again

My favorite comment on Engadget about the article

WOW! An $80 Door Stop with Six Free Drink Coasters!

Hurry while stocks last.

$80 is what those things should have always cost in the first place.

No doubt. There is no reason for an add-on to cost more than the standalone.

Unloading reboxed returns, perhaps?

BURBANK -- Word working its way around the Warner Bros. 85th anniversary event on the studio lot Tuesday night was that some electronics retailers are being flooded with returns of HD DVD players.
In fact, so many are being returned that some retailers are in possession of more returned HD DVD players than new stock.
I won't tell you who said what or which retailers we're talking about, but I will tell you that execs from Amazon.com and Best Buy were in attendance.

The only good thing about that drive is that you can use it with your pc.

And that's of really marginal utility at this point. I would only get it to transfer my hd-dvds onto a home media server, but even then, not really worth it. 80 is a fair price, though. What a joke that for a decent while it was actually more, if not much more, expensive than the stand alone systems. MS has really crappy prices on some of their items.

Default MS's Pathetic Price Drop HD DUD Add on

This is just pathetic:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...VD_Add-On/1438

Hopefully they are just dropping the add on and want to make a profit for the loss.

This response is just classic:

yes you did Bash the XBOX and are telling people to drop the format based on the XBOX. There are other ways to get HD DVD, and the add-on can be use with PC's. I have one and I don't own an XBOX.

Oh wow... I gave some advice to get a PS3 instead of an xbox360! You have some strange ideas of what "bashing is"!

I didnt say anything negative about the xbox360 as a console or HD DVD as a format. My entire basis for my opinion is the very simply fact that in the UK, virtually NO retail stores are still selling HD DVDs while they DO sell Blu Ray!

But there is a simply truth that the xbox360 is unreliable and there are lots of reports of the red light of death. Another fact is that is makes a lot of noise when watching a film. Which ruins the entire atmoshphere when its a silent moment and its meant to be quiet.

But yes, your right.

Alternative ways to play HD DVDs do exist, and far cheaper ones at that.

I know a local store which is selling a HD Dvd player for a very small £129. Which is a great deal if you have hd dvds and you plan to get more and you dont want an xbox360.

But Im not going to lie and promote a format which isnt being stocked in the stores on the highstreet!

And im not going to lie and NOT suggest getting a PS3 instead of an xbox360 or a stand alone HD DVD player. Its my personal opinion that at £300 the PS3 is a very good deal for a BD player which is very easily updated, compact into one device, and offers other functionality like music playback, internet browsing and games and will continue to be supported by Sony and updated regularly!

While Toshiba is likely to drop supporting their HD DVD players if (or when) HD DVD dies.

Had this been 2 weeks ago, I wouldnt be saying this.

But I have now owned both an xbox360 with the HD DVD drive and the now the PS3 with blu ray support. And as a conclusion I would suggest getting a PS3 instead of any kind of HD DVD player, including the xbox360 add on.

For that reason I felt I should post and express that view, in the hope it sways someone away from buying the HD DVD add on.

When Bluray reach the DVD levels then M$ will support it, only makes good business sense. But I think they are more focused on Yahoo! right now.

Microsoft was forced to drop the price of the add on due to Toshiba's slashing the prices of HD players. Call it a price reduction, call it moving inventory, call it clearance...I call it Doomsday.

M$ will always try to get their slimey hands on whatever's making money. They'll get into Blu when Blu is mainstream. And then they'll say that they were all for Blu all along.
