Great news! I was getting worried a 4K UHD release might never happen and would remain only available digitally in 4K.
Window Card: ![]() Trailer: The Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of It Happened One Night from 1939 with Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, Walter Connolly and Roscoe Karns reprising their roles from the movie: Clark Gable's Oscar speech: Last edited by whiteberry; 07-14-2022 at 07:15 AM. |

Despite be restored from camera negative, modern fine grain was made from it for scanning and digital fix, the image have lots of grain. Artistic choice, I presume, like tue intented soft shots of Colbert. Impressive photography direction. |

I'm going to try to watch one of these a week and this week I watched IHON.
I was intrigued to watch this one first because I've never seen it but heard so much about it. On the other hand, I had not even heard of half the movies in the set lol. At first it seemed really cheesy to me but as it went on I came to enjoy it more and a couple scenes made me laugh. But I have a hard time seeing it as a classic other than it's an old movie that was popular at the time. In fact, in the specials they say it was a big surprise how big this movie was and how the buzz built for it. I think this is the first B&W I've seen in Dolby Vision. And I thought the picture was really good and super detailed and there's tons of grain. When I popped in the BD it's definitely a noticeable improvement. I know you guys say the HDR matters for B&W but I just don't see it, and maybe never will. Just looks B&W same as SDR to me. Anyway I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the picture. Iused headphones for sound but simply because I didn't want to mess with synchng for DB without headphones. It was fine but there's not a lot cool sound effects or anything. It's mostly dialog. I'm not sure I saw it mentioned anywhere in the main thread, but the UHD has a whole other movie on it (1080 SDR), You Can't Run Away from It. It's the 1950s remake of this movie. Not sure I'll ever watch this but I flipped through some scenes. Lemon seems to be funnier than Gable! I noticed this movie is rated lower though. The blu-ray is thankfully region free. There's a 10 minute retrospective which was good. Then a long discussion between 2 critics about whether it can be considered a screwball comedy or not. It goes on for 40 minutes, I watched 5. And then some kind of radio special I didn't bother with. The photo gallery of advertisements was cool though. If you like this movie (or you already have it anyway with the set) I think it's a no brainer give the quality of the picture. If you haven't seen and it I'd recommend a rental first before buying it on its own if that's ever an option, because I doubt I will ever watch it again. |

Wow, the dupe negative footage is a huge improvement over the blown out version on the Criterion. Similar to the improvement on the 16mm reel that needed to be spliced into the Spanish Dracula.
I doubt this one will ever look any better! |

Just watched my 4K of It Happened One Night (1934) and I adored it. It's so charming and I caught myself smiling during their fake "argument" scene in the little cabin.
Beautiful film. Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable were fantastic. |

Are there any screencaps comparing the included 2K disc with the Criterion? Only seen 4K vs Criterion comparisons, though I am aware the included 2K is the same restoration. Thanks in advance.
