Default 'Brazil' in July (Universal)

Brazil Blu-ray

Brazil Blu-ray Review

DVD Review are saying that Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil' will hit Blu-ray in July.

http://www.dvdreview.com/news/viewnews.asp?id=12127

There's no mention of any extras. I wish it was coming from Criterion, then I could replace the DVD boxset they released (especially as mine is the first run non-anamorphic version).

Maybe it'll still be a good version.

With our luck, the Criterion will surface at a later date, just like "Fear and Loathing..."

I think this might be a Fear and Loathing situation where Universal releases it first, then Criterion follows up with their edition sometime down the line.

Edit: Sorry for the echo, BillyJack- you're faster on the draw than I am!

I too have the early non-anamorphic Criterion set, so if the reviews are good (and it's Gilliam's cut), I may pick it up as a placeholder till Criterion releases theirs.

cannot believe Universal is issuing this first.
CRAP!!
I've been waiting patiently for 4 years, as this film has been one of my most wanted blu-rays.
hopefully Criterion will eventually release it like Fear and L.
I am glad it is finally coming out; it was getting a bit ridiculous.

Well, it doesn't mean that the Universal disc will be bad. Hopefully Universal doesn't pull a Spartacus and release an inferior disc. I, too, hope that Criterion will release it at some point, but that's not a given, so everyone should be happy it's even being released out at all.

as I said above "I am glad that it is finally coming out".
I've been completely baffled why Criterion hadn't released it, and now we know.
for some unknown reason I had not considered that Universal might be holding it back.
I pray it is the best blu-ray Universal ever issues.

The HD master created for the Criterion anamorphic DVD is pretty old now. When was that released, 7-8 years ago? I sure hope they don't use that master.

I'll wait for the Criterion set. You know it's coming at some point. I just hope the Love Conquers All version gets the HD treatment as well.

Per a personal email to a criterionforum.org member:

"We do hope to re-release [Brazil] on Blu-ray in 2011 or 2012 but don't have an exact date set, so please stay tuned!"

http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/...327950#p327950

So, more than likely it'll be at least the same wait between the Universal release and the Criterion release, which for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was 14 months.

One of my faves... but I'll pass until Criterion tackles it.

most likely they will do a better job on the transfer.
(the main reason)
plus they currently have a box set that contains 3 versions of the film.

Criterion is a well-known distributor on home video of art house films and overlooked classics. They have been known to add copious amounts of extra features to discs and generally treat the movie quite nicely. In Brazil's case, they released a loaded set that is the definitive version on DVD.

'Brazil' in July: YAY!

*Reads further*

but it's Universal not Criterion: NOOOO!

lol, if it's cheap enough I might grab it and it will wet my whistle until the Criterion release finally drops. With all due respect but this film is my most anticipated Criterion Blu.

EDIT: Funny how one of my favorite films is dropping (somewhat) before my birthday.

Who's to say it's going to be just one version, and a poor transfer?

I'll wait to see reviews before I determine if I'll buy it, and at what price.

I'll take that over just being stuck with a crappy Universal release like Spartacus.

Universal will most likely just have a single version of the film with no supplements (except maybe a trailer).

Check out what Criterion provides on their DVD set:
http://www.criterion.com/films/211-b...q=autocomplete

Especially for a film like Brazil, the multiple versions, commentary, documentaries, etc. help to provide context for what is a very interesting production.
