United Kingdom Gwendoline: The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak - November 18th, 2019

Gwendoline: The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik-Yak - November 18th, 2019

Quote:
British label Screenbound Pictures has revealed that it is preparing a Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's cult film Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. Currently, the release is set to arrive on the market on November 4*.

Synopsis: Video vixen Tawny Kitaen (of Whitesnake videos, Witchboard, and VH1's "The Surreal Life") made her motion picture debut as the sexy adventuress who hires a gruff soldier of fortune (Brent Huff) to help find her missing father. But great perils await them on their worldwide quest, including depraved pirates, scorching deserts, steamy jungles and their own naked desires. And even if they can find the legendary lost Land of the Yik Yak, will Gwendoline survive her final ordeal against an empire of lust-crazed warrior women? REMASTERED.

*BASE (British Association of Screen Entertainment) are listing this as a 18/11/2019 release.

That's the same artwork as the Severin US release. Does that mean Screenbound and them are teaming up for this release?

EDIT: Apparently the Amazon listing has Severin down as the studio.

Severin has done intermittent UK releases (The Manson Family, The Killing of America), so perhaps they’ve now signed Screenbound on as their UK distributor?

Great movie. Always enjoyed this right from the mid 80’s VHS era. I even hunted down the Japanese DVD (no English language) just to see this in scope. Own the UK DVD but this will be a nice upgrade. Really looking forward to this.

Was looking for anywhere selling this that wasn't Amazon and found this:

https://www.classicfilmsdirect.com/product/gwendoline-blu-ray

It has a release date of 2nd December here, I wonder if that's why it hasn't appeared on HMV yet

That is the direct sales website of the company releasing the title. Hence why they have it listed. It can be hit and miss but on many of their releases they are cheaper than buying from Amazon but not always.

Are HMV stocking Screenbound titles? they don't seem to have many titles on their site.

Thanks, I think I got the last one at that price.

Why is 'new' in quotation marks? Is there something I should know about Music Magpie?

Not sure, they're not 100% reliable when it comes to their Poundland stock (there are new labels on reseals), but I don't think I've had many issues with online orders.

I'm curious to hear if this disc avoids the subtitle issues the Severin disc has. Apparently, subtitles are required to understand the Chinese (?) dialogue in the film, but the Severin subtitle track also includes subtitles for the deaf or hard-of-hearing (SDH) even when that option isn't chosen.

That's annoying to hear, it's been a common problem with a few Severin releases so it's disappointing they're still doing it. Surely it wouldn't take much extra effort to include a track that at least removes the SDH titles.

Can confirm if you want any non-English translated you need one of two full English sub tracks. Luckily it's only about 30 seconds worth of dialogue during the opening act. A slight shame, but the rest of the disc more than makes up for it.

Have to say this is one of my all-time camp cult classics, and really glad this got the Blu-ray treatment. I would never have thought this would have ever had a chance of getting a great release like this.

Ordered from eBay (musicmagpie) for £9.83. Blind buy for me, but this appears to be such a fast selling release, there must be a decent reason to get it. At least that's my way of thinking

Just ordered one myself at the same price. I absolutely adore this movie ever since I saw it on VHS in the 80s
