USA Cat Women of the Moon 3D Blu-ray (1953) [Region TBC] Coming in 2026

Moderator note:
A proper 3D Blu-ray is coming in 2026.

Original post:
If there were women on the moon, and they dressed like cats, they would be... Cat Women of the Moon!

This 70th Anniversary edition Blu-ray 3D/2D contains a clean, extended print of the film in HD 2D, as well as the only available copy of the original 3D version: a low-quality analog copy which has been further repaired for a more watchable experience, including an upscale to smooth out pixelization, stereo window alignment and extensive correction of unsynchronized frames where possible. Also includes other 3D content from the same year (1953) such as multiple newly restored 3D comics.

Available now for pre-order from VarietyFilms.net

Good old public domain. I assume this is a BD-R?

Interestingly, I was just reading about the "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" blu-ray and it turns out it's released by the same company - it's listed on their order page. Has anybody had any experience with either their 2D or 3D discs?

the13thman:
Yes, professionally manufactured BD-R.

mar3o:
Here are some trailers in 3D SBS format for other Variety Films releases.

Excited to check this out! The bootleg files available out there are rough, but they are true 3D.

The main problem with the old rips of the golden age films is left/right temporal sync, as the source films were interlaced. I’ve experimented with replacing/interpolating duplicate frames and using alignment tools to get better matches between left and right eyes. You can definitely get watchable results, but it really requires frame-by-frame fixing. Variety Films definitely has the chops to make this happen and sounds like they put in the hard hours. Got my pre-order placed!

Exactly. There were some instances where exact sync was impossible as moving one track either forwards or backwards gave the wrong result. In other cases the sync would vacillate every other frame. In any case thankfully with the vast majority this wasn't an issue. Many hours of frame-by-frame correction was done, and further fixing of the stereo window placement in scenes that didn't work as well before. Hopefully in the future someone can find a method to further refine sync with some software method, or better yet the person holding the actual L/R prints will release them before they degrade further.

Shipping costs have always prohibited me from ordering these. Will there be a cost effective way to ship to the UK?

I'm sure I bought some from Amazon but yeah, the cost has put me off buying more. I'll be getting this one though.

The way major titles offer cost effective shipping is by having local distributors. In this case, solutions would be ordering multiple titles at once and getting a custom shipping quote, (a man in Canada did this yesterday & got free shipping), or buying the digital SBS download, which for this title won't be available for a little while.

Can anyone speak to "The World's First 4K 3D Ultra-HD Blu-ray" sold on the same page? I'm very curious, and I believe I have a compatible TV (LG "C6" curved-screen model instead of E6 flat-screen).

This disc is a proof of concept from 2019 that has only about 15 minutes of sample content in over/under format, which is twice the resolution of 1080p. It doesn't require a 3D disc player, just a UHD player. While I can't speak to your model specifically, it seems that most if not all 4K 3D flat panels have the ability to play back over/under or SBS 4K content in 3D at full resolution when activated manually.

Are there any other public domain field sequential 3D titles that you can convert? I use to have them all on DVD.

I can do field sequential to Blu-ray 3D (or digital copy) transfers from DVD or VHS, (also including home movies from Toshiba and NuView camcorder and adapter) but most of those titles are copyrighted so that would be an individual transfer request for personal use/backup.

Which ones aren't copyrighted?

Robot Monster is public domain. Cat-Women of the Moon may or may not be public domain (conflicting info about whether the rights were renewed). Hannah Lee had its copyright renewed (not public domain). Some of the lost 3D from the 1920s, plus some saved on 3-D Rarities is public domain. In general, anything over 100 years old is public domain. Not aware of anything else, unless you count 2D conversions, like Plan 9 from Outer Space and Night of the Living Dead by Legend 3D and PassmoreLab.

Sorry for the confusion … is the 3D version of this film (on the 70th anniversary blu-ray that is currently available for preorder at Variety Films) anaglyph, SBS, over/under or frame-packed?
