For those who are fans of the original Sullivan movies (or had a family member that watched them incessantly growing up) you can now order the entire series on blu-ray, including "A New Beginning" which I have not personally seen.

Oddly enough, the website starts off calling this a 4K release, as do the streaming versions on gazebotv.com, but the above link is definitely for a blu-ray. I suppose it could've been remastered in 4K but the blu-ray's are compressed at 2k...imo the streaming version of Anne of Avonlee looks incredible after watching a clip. This might be the best the films have ever looked, maybe ever.

I am not able to find this set on Amazon, other then shopatsullivan.com and gazebotv.com directly. Does anyone out there have this set?

Update: After talking with a specialist on gazebotv.com they confirmed that: "The trilogy has been restored in 4k but reformated into HD." So I guess there does not exist a 4K set at this time.

Sullivan has a history of misleading publicity: they described their re-release of the "Road to Avonlea" series as being in HD, when in fact they were just regular DVDs.

Question is---will all four films be made available separately? Those of us who already have the Anne of Green Gables blu-ray, which was released a couple of years ago, may not want to double-dip. Plus, there's the fact that films 3 and 4 are absolute crap; I have no interested in buying anything other than the second film, since I already have the first.

Not at this time. However I bought the “trilogy” via streaming and it’s incredibly obvious they’ve been remastered. I believe the bit about it being a 4K master reformatted in HD.

Perhaps not perfect comparisons, but these are screenshots from my phone. Looks remastered to me!

The complete Blu-ray box set has been available for a while now (though maybe this one is a little different?). Originally my understanding was that they were going to at least release the 2nd one individually like they had done the first, but after a fair bit of time with no news on that, I asked Sullivan that very question you posed. They only responded that it was available in the complete set. When I told them that not everyone could afford such an expensive set to see just one film that they want (since they already bought the 1st individually), they never responded to me. I refuse to pay for this crazy overkill boxset for one film (the 2nd) that I want to see on Blu. So I'm still on DVD for the 2nd, which is just silly. Sullivan should release the 2nd individually.

And yes, you are absolutely right that they've played fast-and-loose with their marketing before. The box set for Road to Avonlea DVD's prominently displays "HD" and so forth right on the covers, even though it is DVD's - talk about misleading people. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that somebody working on them just was a complete non-technical person who genuinely thought that just because it was restored in HD means they could claim it is HD even though they release it on an SD medium. But now I see they are pulling the same thing again by claiming you can watch "in beautiful 4k", even though it isn't 4k. They should just say "mastered in 4k" or "mastered in HD" which is how other studios handle these issues, but instead they imply that the end-result you are getting is 4k etc and that's not accurate. I'm starting to think maybe they do this kind of stuff on purpose to try to use buzzwords they think might increase sales.

Oh and BTW, if this is the same exact boxset from last year, the DTS-HD audio that is mentioned in the marketing also was reported in another thread to be inaccurate - that it is just Dolby Digital.

I bought this set for my wife to watch with our daughters and they are thrilled with it. I think the picture quality is nice. There are issues with the aspect ratio that bother some people, but the bits that I’ve watched haven’t bothered me. I waited for a Boxing Day sale to buy it so it wasn’t completely outrageously overpriced.

No listing of aspect ratio? Knowing Sullivan it's probably the same cropped off at the top and bottom transfer. How about the orignal sound mix? I don't even know why I ask, Sullivan Home Entertainment always puts out a low effort product at premium price point.

They've all been cropped like the blu-ray but not much, and all was approved by Sullivan.

It's not too bad. In fact, it's rather tastefully done in most places. As someone whose family owned the 2-tape Disney sets way back in the '80s, I still find them quite watchable on BD.

Thanks. These are definitely blu-rays tho.

My girlfriend has the Anne of Green Gables blu-ray and also purchased Anne of Avonlea on GazeboTV.com. While both are HD transfers, they have tons of DNR applied. Faces look waxy and there are lots of blurry artifacts everwhere. For the ridiculous amount they charge for their product, they REALLY should get someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to restorations/transfers.

Maybe in some shots, especially on the older films, but there are also some stunning scenes, such as in The Continuing Story. I'm seeing wallpaper patterns and intricate clothing designs I never noticed before.

Just a question out of curiosity. Never saw these before but my connection to this is I was working at a law firm in 2006. One day the girl who sat next to me were talking about childhood shows and movies or whatever and she mentions in passing AoGG as her absolute favorite. Since I was taking a long Christmas vacation, I made sure to get the box set that happened to be coming out shortly for her (20th Anniversary set?) - even 2-day or 3-day shipping it to make sure I could give it to her before I left. Obviously she totally loved it, plus she hadn't seen the 3rd one yet. Haven't seen her in years but we still talk on Facebook.

I've passingly noticed all the various sets that have come out over the years since. I didn't quite understand at that time about WS vs FS and HD and things like that. Does that DVD set still hold up as far as quality of the transfer, OAR, no DNR etc.?

The DVDs were crap by today's standards, but had the original aspect ratio (fullscreen).

But they were great by 2006 standards right?

Maybe the third film. The first two (especially Avonlea) looked like a single layered disc and was horrifically blotchy.

Yikes. How bad we talking, if we conservatively give Part 3 an A or even B+, how would the grades of 1 and 2 be (by 2006 standards)? Not that she would have complained (obviously can't do anything about it now), and it was the thought that counts, but I'd kind of feel bad all these years later if I knew the movies I gave her looked THAT bad. I do recall weighing the pros and cons of getting whatever the existing set was in 2006 vs paying the premium for that upcoming set which of course had all those flashy buzzwords attached to it (even though I didn't necessarily understand all of them).

Either way Sullivan got a nice chunk of change from me.
