Henry has been on my watchlist forever (yes, somehow I've never seen the film in its entirety), so I'll gladly break my cherry in glorious, grimy 4K UHD.

I remember John McNaughton said that, right after the film finally opened in New York in the spring of 1990 (it was filmed nearly four years earlier), he received a call from Martin Scorsese himself, who'd had McNaughton looked up so he could call him, personally. McNaughton said Scorsese told him that "Henry" was the 'best debut film I've seen in over ten years', and that it was 'truly brilliant'. McNaughton was kinda over the moon, as you might expect....
A couple of years later, Scorsese and his regular producer (then), Barbara De Fina, asked McNaughton to direct a film they were producing, starring Robert De Niro (!), for Universal. Richard Price wrote it. It was called, "Mad Dog and Glory". It is a pretty good, underrated little film. A few years after that, Scorsese would again lavish praise on a film McNaughton did called, "Normal Life", that starred Luke Perry and Ashley Judd. That film marked a nice return to McNaughton's gritty, indie, real-life style. Safe to say, Scorsese is a fan. Ebert also absolutely loved this film, even though he said it repulsed him. And, yes, this film definitely has some intentional dark humor among the disturbing stuff. It's just one of those films, like "Salo", where people feel bad and actually aren't sure if they're supposed to laugh at anything or not. You are. |
