Be a pity if this didn't get a 4K finish, seeing as they shot anamorphic on the full Super 35 width of the 35mm negative to get that old-school 2.55 widescreen aspect. We know the DCPs are 2K so that's not a great indicator, and seeing as Lionsgate have finished so much other crap in 4K I wonder why they skimped on this?

I had no doubt a UHD version was coming because this had a Dolby Vision theatrical release from Lionsgate.
I updated the IMDb technical page myself last week after reading the American Cinematographer article: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3783958/...ef_=tt_dt_spec Aspect Ratio: 2.55 : 1 (CinemaScope) Camera: Aaton A-Minima, Panavision C-Series Custom Lenses Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL2, Panavision C-Series Custom Lenses Laboratory: EFilm (digital intermediate) Negative Format: 16 mm (one scene) (Kodak Vision3 500T 7219) 35 mm (Kodak Vision3 500T 5219, Vision3 250D 5207) Cinematographic Process: Digital Intermediate (2K) (master format) Panavision (anamorphic) (one scene) Super 35 (anamorphic) (source format) To create a 2.55:1 presentation they did something very interesting: they used Super 35 as an anamorphic format (2x) to get a 2.66:1 aspect ratio. Then they slightly cropped the sides to get to 2.55:1 (the original Cinemascope ratio during the '50s). They needed special Panavision lenses to achieve that. I've read the AC article, guess I missed the 2K part.
![]() They didn't use any particularly special process though, all they did was shoot regular 2x anamorphic using the full width of the aperture (Super 35, in modern parlance) instead of the usual Academy aperture which takes into account the soundtrack on the left. The full ratio of 4-perf is 1.33, so 2x that = 2.66, that's how it's always been. I don't know if you recall the aspect ratio snafu on Criterion's Dressed to Kill Blu-ray, XDTV? They accidentally used the full width of the negative rather than the intended framing, as pretty much every movie shot anamorphic on 35mm has that extra information on the left, they just don't frame for it (using the appropriate ground glass in viewfinders etc). |

That would be exactly 5 months after I first saw it. But it didn't really open everywhere til this past weekend. So that's only a 3 month gap from its wide release to its Blu-ray/UHD. I just hope it doesn't get pushed back if it cleans up at the Oscars and gets a boost at the box office.

In this case they did use Super 35 as an anamorphic format, something that today can be done easily because there is no need to print back to standard 35mm for projection anymore. Super 35 anamorphic would also give much more resolution compared to the cropped spherical Super 35. Not that it matters in this case because the movie was finished at 2K resolution |
