Oddly enough, I have EXACTLY the same ear muffs.
I bought them for my workshop but I keep them next to my computer. I' ve found that extraneous household noises (TV, music) can distract me when I'm working on the computer so I keep them within reach. That being said, I also have a supply of small, foam plugs to wear when I'm doing things like cutting the grass (the big ear muffs look a little too goofy to wear in public). |

in my shop and while doing yard work (mowing/trimming/blowing), i use the 3m peltors i bought at lowe's.
![]() for shooting, i use the peltor ultimate 10; they offer 30 db of noise reduction. i use them in conjunction with the little foam ear plugs as well. ![]() |

interesting thread.
I have a pair of these left over from when I was a firefighter in the military. They were good enough to wear standing 10 feet away from a running F-15 comfortably, and the wire going behind the head is convenient since it doesn't interfere with whatever hat or helmet you may be wearing. I've worn them with both my Cairns firefighting helmet and regular kevlar battle rattle. Worked everywhere from a busy flightline to the shooting range. ![]() |

I use Etymotic Research ER20s for most concerts as they don't reduce the treble substantially more than the bass and thus you still get the pleasant sibilants of the hi-hat and cymbals coming through at the volume they should, almost every other protection I've tried completely muffles all the high frequency info substantially more than the lows and is not enjoyable.
Etymotic - http://www.etymotic.com/consumer/hea...rotection.html I do support hearing protection, I've had constant tinnitus for 6+ years now, around 13-14kHz and about 70% to the left of my head. It sucks. For loud events like F1 races I used Speedo silicone swimmers earplugs. They aren't certified for noise reduction, they're for swimming, thus they don't carry a dB reduction rating...but they are every bit as effective as 30dB reduction headphones I've tried by Peltor at the track and they are far easier to transport and extremely confortable in the ear, allowing you full motion to move your shades, put on a hat, etc. ![]() |

Honestly I would rather have suffered uniform loss of hearing to perhaps around 6dB than to suffer constant tinnitus. I have no hearing loss according to the tests I went through when this was first starting in 2009, and that's great, but this constant pitch all the time...ugh. Okay it's easier to deal with in 2016 despite being much worse than it was in 2009, but back then I'd wake up sometimes in teh first few months and hear it immediately and just cry, it's very hard to handle in the first year.

Etymotic ER-20s. I've had ongoing tinnitus probably since my late teens. It faded somewhat into a low background noise for about a decade or so as I was being more careful and wearing earplugs to concerts. But this summer I forgot my earplugs when I was on vacation as we weren't planning on attending any shows or anything. But nonetheless we went to a Dave and Busters arcade for the better part of a night, probably about 4 hours. In hindsight, that was way too long and I wish we would have bailed after about half an hour max since my ears are still ringing louder than usual months later.
