Default CEPro: "HD DVD vs. Blu-ray: It’s the Interactivity, Stupid!"

Did this idiot get his talking points straight from Microsoft, or is he on their payroll. This article is total stupidity. Missing the major factors completely and focussing on the pointless.

http://www.cepro.com/article/hd_dvd_...ity_stupid/D1/

Thats based on a lot of false assumptions in my opinion. 1. that people are really concerned about the extras content (research shows that most aren't, they just want the best possible quality movie). 2. That the battle is about anything but studio support, that is ALL that matters, without studios you have nothing. 3. That the fact that sales are 3-1 in favor of Blu-ray somehow mean nothing. 4. That Blu-ray's storage advantage isn't a huge factor going forward.

BD-j, being javascript, is restricted only to what the program can program. This means anything that a java programmer can think of and figure out, he can program. HDi does not have this advantage. Sure its easier to use now and has full internet capabilities already, but you are limited in what you can do with it.
Besides, the facts show people don’t care so much about interactivity on movie discs. 300 by Warner Brothers added exclusive extras to the HD DVD that the Blu-ray release lacked. Although the price was similar, the Blu-ray outsold the HD DVD by more than 3 to 1. Similarly, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix added exclusive extras on the HD DVD release, and still the Blu-ray outsells it at a similar pace as 300.
Interactivity is nice and all, but it does not sell movies. Most people just want to watch the film, not play games or shop online or chat. They can do that on their computer after the movie.
My response.

Maybe Hollywood should realize people don't like going to the theatre because we don't get any extras with the movie. Oh wait I actually couldn't care less about extras.

BD-J is not Javascript. It is Java. Apparently HDi is Javascript. Javascript has nothing to do with Java other than having a similar syntax. It is a dumbed down language for the web whereas Java is a full blown language like C#.

Microsoft shill

Theres too many "what if's" in Microsoft and HDi's favor. And he completely ignores the fact that HDDVD is dead already, and no amount of interactivity is gonna save it.

The MSFT presence in IPTV is muted and that's being charitable. To date, outside of projects MSFT funds directly, interest in HDi is non existent.

The author hasn't spent enough time in the broadcast space to understand how far behind MSFT's offering is in that area, or he would not risk his reputation to put to words concepts that are laughable to people on the ground today.

Outside of PCs, MSFT's ability to expand in other spaces has been meeting resistance in the form of legislation and entrenched competition. But because of it's base in the PC-world, the windows' group-think mentality has also affected their ability to innovate in areas that really shouldn't have been saddled with windows baggage.

sorry, I meant java. I got confused there for a sec. I often get them mixed up. Why did they have to name them such similar things?

It's not even that similar. Sun created Java, which became the big thing. At that point Netscape had just finished independently designing an unrelated scripting language they called LiveScript. Netscape got permission from Sun to redub the language JavaScript with the idea they could promote the technologies together.

On the other hand, JavaScript has come a long way since then, and it is in many ways a "full blown language".

It probably comes down the BD-J being more powerful but somewhat more difficult to use and HDi being easier to use but more limited. As companies develop BD-J libraries over time, they'll start getting more and more out of it with less development time.

Derek R. Flickinger is vice president of R & D for Interactive Homes (the author of this article)

It's not surprising that he's seeing interactivity everywhere and that he think it's really important..
