Intel Removes SGX from 12th Gen Processors

Intel has removed support for SGX (software guard extension) in 12th Generation Intel Core 11000 and 12000 processors, rendering modern PCs unable to playback Blu-ray disks in 4K resolution.

This technical problem arises from the fact that Blu-ray disks require Digital Rights Management (DRM), which needs the presence of SGX to work.

This is a feature that Intel introduced in the Skylake generation back in 2016, enabling PCs to play protected Blu-ray disks for the first time.

As seen in Intel's current datasheets for the 11th and 12th generation of its Core desktop processors, the SGX is listed as a deprecated technology, so it's no longer available.

Big deal. I don't know anyone who ever used a PC for playing back 4K Blu-ray anyway as all the drives were unable to read the discs ootb.

Starting in Q1 2021 when Intel releases their next generation microarchitecture of processors there will be no longer be any new desktop processors that support the hardware needed for 4K UHD Blu-ray DRM.

Neither of the Intel 11th generation Desktop processors that will be available (Mainstream Rocket Lake S / HEDT/Server Ice Lake X/SP) will support both Intel SGX & integrated graphics which is what is required for the DRM to enable native PC 4K UHD Blu-ray hardware playback.

Intel's upcoming 10th generation mainstream part Comet Lake S appears it will be the last generation of PC desktop CPU anytime soon to support 4K UHD Blu-ray DRM.

So, will the BDA remove the Intel SGX requirement then or is 4K UHD Blu-ray on PC desktop officially dead as of Q1 2021?

That isn't true. There are a few drives that can read 4K Blu-rays out of the box with the right processor and software.
