I'm sure Tiger on Beat is not upscaled. It just has a lot of DNR used. The same with Hitman. Agressive use of DNR. Sex and Zen has actual HD quality and it has a 7.1 remix.

the original Mandarin Synch Sound was replaced by a new Mandarin DUB. yeah, go figure... (yes, the original Mandarin was the one with Cantonese Synch Sound bits included for Richard Ng).
and didn't it also have a bad Remix?
Edit: yes it's a horrible Remix on both Tracks. totally worthless except that the Video is in HD... i think it's also a MONO Downmix with added Surround Effects. yes imagine this was a REAL 5.1 Movie before! unbelievable.
Markgway, is there a reason why you are focusing on the past and pretty much ignoring every HK Blu-ray releases after K&R's last crummy release of an old film?
New Hong Kong movies released on HK Blu-ray, the new Hui Brothers films recently released (about five of them), and 95 percent of Vicol's releases of classic films are a revelation and superb quality.

Yes Madam and Tiger on the Beat look true HD to me. Dont forget the HK releases of all three One Armed Swordsman films, all True HD. I can also recommend the Vicol release of God Of Gamblers.
Spannick, thats a bummer about Once Upon A Time in China and America, i bought the disc but have yet to watch it.

Well good, I would add all the ones I suggested into recommended section, including God of Gamblers. Vicol hasnt released a classic in a while - the last thing they need is any negative publicity when they are releasing incredible quality blu-rays of classic films compared to the K&R ones.
FROM BEIJING WITH LOVE (Vicol, HK) - 5.1 remix, pretty sure it's a 96kHz upsample of the remix heard on the Universe DVD, which wasn't good.
JIANG HU: THE TRIAD ZONE (K&R, HK) - 7.1 remix for Cantonese, 6.1 remix for Mandarin. The remix is generally inoffensive, but the non-anamorphic letterboxed DVD offered 5.1 and original 2.0 mixes for both languages.

FANTASY MISSION FORCE (Steamboat/Daredo, Germany) - English subtitles and mono soundtracks in German, English and two versions of Mandarin audio. One Mandarin track is entirely in Mandarin and features a different and newer synthesizer musical score in many scenes - this was on the Malaysian DVD. The other Mandarin track has portions in English but features the original music.
While the Vicol Golden Harvest Blu-rays have proper remastered HD video, many of them (with exceptions) only have 5.1 audio and not the original mono or 2.0 audio. This means many of them will go under the AARRGGHH!! column.
True enough. Although if the remix has no NEW audio I'll put that as a qualifier. E.g. God of Gamblers.

Fair point. It's maybe not a good idea to clog up the lists with newish titles that are 9/10 going to be good enough. I might exclude those and only mention them if there's a reason to.
You put From Beijing With Love in the negative section? Are you forgetting how many years it took to get not only a decent English-subbed video of this film and the letterboxed pieces of crap released before hand and now we get an excellent Blu-ray of From Beijing With Love and it just gets thrown into the "meh" section all because it doesn't have the audio option that pleases you yet it does have an audio option to please Hong Kong buyers - a culture obsessed with new? Vicol needs to sell these Blu-rays and they need to have technical aspects which are appealing to the local market first. And this blu sounds better than ever yet people living in another country making minor complaints and not knowing how hard it is to sell old movies in a city that loves new things over old things.
The Vicol Blu-ray of From Beijing With Love is especially incredible BASED on its video release history. Every Vicol Blu-ray of an old Hong Kong movie so far is pretty amazing compared to previous releases. THAT'S what counts.
Or you can buy forgettable new Asian movies from Well Go with perfect video/audio because it's not the quality of the movie that counts, it's the quality of the video or audio or extras or packaging.
I don't have "From Beijing With Love," but I kind of have to agree with Toddly6666.

There does seem something wrong with putting a movie that's only been available in non-anamorphic widescreen but now has a true HD transfer in the "crap" pile because of the sound mix. I think I would put those in the "good" pile, with a description of the remix limitation. But if something's in the "bad" pile, it should mean: "this is a waste of money. Don't buy this." Or maybe have three categories - "perfect," "flawed" and "a waste of money."
Of course, Markgway, it's your list. You get to make it anyway you wish.

I would find this list more useful if it focused on cuts, upscales, bad transfers, NEW audio (which in all honesty only bothered me on a couple titles) and made the 5.1 remix as a side note.

Yes. The whole point is to list BDs with problems. Just because FBWL is better than anything that's come before doesn't alter the fact that Vicol slipped up by not including an original mix. I'm not saying to anyone 'don't buy these titles', just pointing out for reference what their problems are. If you're happy with all of Vicol's output then that's terrific. I'm very pleased for you.

Two points I would make here:
1. I really don't care what your average Joe Public in Hong Kong wants. This list isn't for them. It's for members of Bluray.com and people who care about how movies are presented.
2. It would cost nothing to include a lossy mono mix that takes up little space on any disc.

I think you guys are missing the point here. If these remixes don't bother you, that's fine -- for YOU. But they bother ME and they bother OTHER people. The list is all about informing consumers and it's bloody hard to get good info on these titles online. If the information isn't relevant to your tastes, that's fine. It's surprising how personal some users take any criticism of HK Blu Rays.

Cuts, yes, I'm going to factor that in where possible.
If anyone has notes on BAD transfers (as opposed to simply not perfect) I'll be happy to include them.
I also am happy to note where known if a 5.1 remix is all original source or newly created.
I'm doing the heavy lifting for now, but in the end this list will only be as good as you guys want it to be.
