[Show spoiler]Some cool news.

Criterion technical director Lee Kline has confirmed that Truffaut's masterpiece will be joining the collection in the future.

via A.V. Club:

Quote:
Now, if the filmmaker is still around, you can ask them what they think. We’re working on Truffaut’s Day For Night, and [cinematographer] Pierre-William Glenn is still alive. He helped us with the restoration, and when we were doing it, we found a lot of crazy close-ups that looked super grainy and weird. I asked why they were like that, and he told me that when Truffaut was editing the film, there were moments when he wanted close-ups that he hadn’t filmed. So, he optically printed other shots—medium shots, say—and blew them up into close-ups. He flung those in rather than reshooting, and by blowing them up, they became ugly pieces of film that really looked inferior to everything surrounding them. Glenn said he wished they could be fixed, and we told him we could with various grain techniques. I asked him if he thought Truffaut would be okay with our doing that, and he said Truffaut wouldn’t have cared. As a director, he made the choice because he cared more about having a close-up there than he did the quality of the image. It seems safe to assume that he wouldn’t have wanted anyone to think about the filmmaking at that moment, so he wouldn’t have been averse to easing the quality of the image.

Eh, for something like an optical zoom, I wish they'd just leave them alone. That's how an optical zoom looks, it isn't a mistake or a technical problem that you could argue needs to be "fixed". These shots were grainy when the original film was released, just keep them as they were originally.

I haven't seen it, but I know that Universal tried to similarly "fix" the optical zooms in To Kill a Mockingbird and from what I've read they wound up looking not so good.

Leave them alone.

Great news. Either Warner's license expired, or they are now licensing out certain titles (this being their second or third now).

Day For Night is streaming on Warner Archive Instant, so I'm sure they got this one from WB. Hardly surprising, though. When you hear about WB/Criterion deal, titles such as DFR, Blow-UP, The New Land, The Emigrants are the first ones to spring to mind.

It's basically confirmed that we are getting Kurosawa's Dreams as well. Also, the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy (two of which are WB films). So more WB films are definitely on the way.

All we need is a release of Wild Child and Small Change and all the essential Truffaut's will be on blu-ray.

No love for Fahrenheit 451?

edit: Whoops, I guess there is a German blu from Koch Media. Quality doesn't seem to be very good though.

Excited about this, I love Truffaut's films and am very interested in the "plot" of this one. I feel a double bill this and 8 1/2 coming for some of us.

Also, kind of upset about August release date, no July b&n sale pick up.

I haven't seen this film since the original WB DVD release so this will be great to revisit in HD on BLU. Day one purchase for sure.

Can't believe the lack of posts here as well as no site review, seems like the Criterion reviews go up weeks in advance.

Anyway, I watched the film yesterday and really enjoyed it. Like Truffaut's approach, never seemed pessimistic or scoffing at the audience, but like an actual film lover's passionate depiction of the making of a film. And after watching Soft Skin last week, I did find some interesting similarities between it and the fictional Meet Pamela.
