I just saw the the thread from highdefdigest and watched the video in here :
episode217 - how tough is a Blu-ray Disc (beginning at 12:37) I was very disappointed at process (and result), it only took few minutes, and it used just a dual-format player but I don't know what the problem is so I didn't feedback : http://dl.tv/2008/01/dltv_ep_217_how...u.php#comments can anyone try it? Blu-ray Disc isn't that weak I think... |

Using steel wool to basically remove the top layer of the Blu-ray coating - and permanently scratching it - isn't exactly normal wear and tear on a BD disc. Why would you be disappointed?
For basic abuse (dropping, scuffing against case, etc.) it does just fine. |

Okay, after I stopped LMFAO, and despite the ridiculousness of scratching the discs with steel wool... I actually watched their video. THEIR TESTING IS PURE & UTTER BS It's all faked, and proves nothing. At 14:40, he shows the scratched up BR disc... sure, it looks scratched up, but they're all superficial scratches. He then puts the disc in the player, and then they cut to "3-5 minutes later" (This should have been the first clue that it's BS... 3-5 mins? Did they not time it?) Anyway, for kicks, he tests a TDK disc with Durabis (I actually thought BR used Durabis... but I digress). The TDK disc is scratched, but not as many as the BR disc - and they're all superficial. He puts it in the player, and magically (no cuts), it starts to play. Another cut, and he compares both discs side by side... clearly showing the BR disc with more scratches. BUT - at ~ 16:45 you can clearly see where the BR disc has a large radial ... scratch is not the right word - gouge? - in it. Of course it didn't play... that gouge looked deep enough to almost go through the entire disc. Obviously what's happened is in the convenient cut, they've swapped the steel wool scratched disc for the gouged disc... and when they've gone to compare, the host has stuffed up and held up the tampered disc. This is pure and utter BS from a clearly biased site, attempting to fool people with their shonky, completely discredited, FALSE 'testing'. Myth - BUSTED. Not that DL.TV had any credibility to begin with... but they certainly have none now. |

I don’t think Sony intends for the hard coating to stand up to steel wool, but finger prints and light scratches yes. Plus stockstar1138 has a point the BD look as if they had used the Box cutter on the the BD.

DL.TV has a long anti-Blu-ray bias. They suck. I used to email them about it, but gave up and just stopped watching.

dl.tv is absolutely right! i would have never invested in blu had i known blu-ray discs wouldn't have held up to diamond bits, chop saws, chisels, nail guns, chainsaws, or belt sanders!
for the love of buddha, if word about this gets out then HD-DVD will win!! NOOOO!!!!!!! dunbasses. hard-coating is better, not indestuctable. |

So...why is there a break after he scratches up the disc and when he goes to put the disc in the player? Hmmmm...
I believe one of the following is the reason for the break: 1. The scratched up Blu ray disc actually played and they didn't want anyone to see it! ![]() 2. They didn't want anyone to see them substitute the Blu ray version of the disc with the HD DVD version ![]() Really, a better test would have been for him to try the disc after the permanent marker, but that was too easy. Anyways, no one will really take steel wool to their media. The protective coating is doing the job it is supposed to do. This would have been raved about if it was an HD DVD feature. |
