They're crap now.
I just decided that enough was enough. They play awful and the storylines are lame. Like, really. This 'Blue Umbrella' thing is just fanboy bait. |

The remakes have loads of cut content and they altered the storyline. RE3 is very short and linear. The games themselves don't even yield much to enjoy in general. The guns feel weak, the dialogue is cringe, and every area looks too dark. The reason I liked the pre-2005 games was that they were atmospheric, always creepy, had interesting storylines, and the sense of eerieness made you feel like it was coming up for the end of the world. Then RE4 ruined that. Although 4 is still a great game. But that sequel was arguably quite silly. The idea that villagers drop stuff when they aren't using guns just "killed" the franchise, then it was reborn for casuals who never liked fixed camera angles and limited supplies to begin with. |

![]() However, I've gone back and have been slowly working my way through the library of titles, and even without crossing the finish line I'm a huge fan. Just for reference, I've played all the main line games (I'm currently playing through 6, yeah I know) and both revelations games. What I don't understand about your argument here is that RE, as a franchise, presents such a wide variety of stuff. If you want survival-horror, you got 1, 0, 2, 3 (borders on action), and 7. If you want action, you've got 4, 5, 6, and Village (which has got at least one section that creeped me TF out though). And that doesn't even touch the remakes. RE2R is damn masterpiece, and I'd have figured it would have all the atmosphere you could ever want. RE3R gets a lot of flak, but its a great action-oriented title, has Jill Valentine ![]() RE4R is about as perfect a remake as you can get. I find the stories and characters pretty good, especially the long running characters (Ethan is definitely too much of a blank slate character for me though, when compared to a series full of iconic characters). I don't think I've every played a horror game with an absolutely knock-out story, aside from The Last of Us, its more of a reason to push you forward most of the time. Resident Evil has always had a certain level of cheese though, which I love. So for me your post is odd. Did you just buy the entire RE library and decide, just now in 2024 that the series was trash, then decided to sell? I don't get it. |

I’ve tried to play several RE games but I’m just not enough of a gamer to truly get into them. I always end up getting lost and frustrated after a few hours. I love the stories and effects, I just wish they had like a super easy story mode.

Capcom does consistently milk the cash cow, though.
I don't see the point in them putting a new spin on the series, to essentially beat a dead horse. For example, they always do a game, movie or Netflix series about what happened to Raccoon City. Since we know the city got destroyed, why do we need to keep seeing this outcome in a different medium? Also, when it comes to newer storylines, they drip feed this oh so slowly, to the point where it feels a little forced. But the games aren't really that scary any longer. A big part of this reason boils down to repeatedly bringing back characters like Leon, who are nothing like an ordinary guy ending up in Silent Hill, a secret Umbrella facility, or whatever, being absolutely unprepared for what is ahead. I like horror games where you don't feel so overpowered. Which was what Ethan Winters was like, before the mould made him super duper powerful. Along with his daughter, Rosemary. That Heather Mason copycat. |

The original RE2 is a classic. I completed the game and it's the best one IMO.
Not a big fan of the first one. Only played the demo of part 3 and didn't like having to run from Nemesis. RE4 classic is decent but dumps the zombie theme. RE5, not a fan. I only got so far and then lost interest in the stiff controls. RE6 haven't played it yet. RE7, very tense and effective survival horror on PSVR1. RE8 tough demo, didn't play the full game yet. RE2 remake, decent demo. RE3 remake, decent demo. RE4 remake, decent demo. I could've bought the new games cheap, but held off for now. I like the RE games for horror, but am not a huge fan of tank controls or static cameras and limited ammo, areas to roam. Give me an entire city to freely explore without tons of road blocks, and filled with walking zombies and monsters, and that'll be awesome in the more modern RE style (no tank controls). The modern games fix the controls and are much better controls IMO. Evil Within 1, really tense, tough RE style horror survival game. Evil Within 2, lost interest, but still have it for PS4. I was always a Silent Hill kid growing up. I'd watch my Dad play the Resident Evil games and wonder how he did it, since I was never good with the inventory management thing (and I'm still not, tbh). Granted, I was introduced to both franchises when I was probably way too young, but I digress. Silent Hill won me over as a kid, and I still arguably like its aesthetic a bit more.
As a kid, I don't think I really liked zombies; I remember the covers of the Director's Cut and RE2 scared me, so I never played them. The OG RE4 was the first one that I played myself, mostly because I had a big crush on Leon when I was younger. Color me surprised that the game was actually a lot of fun too, even if I was pretty bad at it! So far, I've only played RE2 remake and RE4 remake, and watched playthroughs of the others. It's a series I want to like; I've long gotten over my fear and now really like spooky things, but it just so happens that I'm not good with first-person games. I've been meaning to try RE8 since they have the 3rd person mode, but haven't gotten around to it, and I know I'd be missing pieces without playing 7. I hope the future games return to the 3rd person perspective. Especially when it comes to games where you play as a pre-made character rather than a blank slate, I've never really felt the need to "be in the head of the character". I'm perfectly fine, and perfectly engrossed, even if I can see the character themselves. That said, I actually quite like the REmakes. Granted, I have little emotional or nostalgic ties to the originals, but I feel like they really made them more accessible for more casual gamers like myself. Even now, for whatever reason, those original games are just hard (it's a skill issue, I'll admit), but I've never felt that the REmakes are too difficult, while still providing a challenge. I've never been great with tank controls either, though I do eventually get the hang of it. I really appreciate them taking out the giant spiders in 2 as well. I'd love for them to redo RE1 in the same style, but I know I probably wouldn't luck out in the spider department. Anywho, I can see why a diehard fan of the originals may not like them. They certainly take their liberties, but in my opinion, trim a bit of the fat (in RE3's case, perhaps a bit too much of it), and fine-tune the rest. With the years and technological upgrades, I think what we as consumers find "scary" has really changed too. Fear is a matter of perspective, of course, which is why I almost feel like "survival tension" would be a better name for the genre now. For a while there, the series really leaned into the action over horror, and now they're dialing it back and finding a happy medium. Whether the creatures scare you or not, I think the real "fear" comes from the challenge- either the limited ammo or the heightened pace or more narrow levels, etc. Or maybe it's more "survival spooky" than horror. Regardless, all of this is to say, I'm sorry to hear that the series isn't working for you anymore. Hope they're able to win you back somehow, whether that's a new game, or picking up the old ones again after a bit of a break. |

I sold SH3 and 4, as I was skint. The 2nd game being a platinum re-issue, CeX would not buy it. And SH1's case had a chip in the corner. Meh.
But buying RE or SH games still sealed today, costs hundreds. The SH HD collection in 2012 was apparently a botched up piece of crud. If they lost the coding, the original games will never be remastered properly. |
