Jim Carrey says he's retiring from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2

"I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough."

Jim Carrey has revealed that he plans to retire from his decades-long acting career after the release of his latest movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which came out in cinemas today (April 1).

While promoting the film's second installment, Carrey was asked to respond to comments made by Dolly Parton in which she said that she'd like the actor to play her former music partner, Porter Wagnor, in a biopic about her life.

The actor and comedian told Access that although Dolly's wishes were a "lovely thing", he's "retiring". After host Kit Hoover asked if this surprise revelation was a joke, he responded, "I'm being fairly serious".

When further pressed on the subject, the Bruce Almighty star explained that it would take some convincing for him to return to our screens.

"It depends if the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink and it says to me that it's gonna be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I'm taking a break."

Carrey went on to discuss his hobbies outside of acting and stressed that he now wants to live a more peaceful life outside of the Hollywood spotlight.

"I really enjoy my quiet life and I love putting paint on a canvas and I really love my spiritual life. I feel like – and this might be something you don't hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough."

Carrey has certainly provided us with a plethora of incredible films over the years, from classic comedies like The Mask, to heartbreaking dramas such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Hoover told Carrey, "I do love your talent, I do hope you continue to make us laugh and smile."

"I'm going to be in the world no matter what. We have more of an effect on the world than we know," Carrey replied. "We don't have to be multi-hyphenates to affect the world."
