Saw this in Dolby today. I have to say that this series continually surprises me, exceeding my expectations. I'm not a fan of prequels, just as a concept. But this one does the kind of prequel I don't mind, in that it's just another story in the same universe, maybe with some tangential ties to the other movies, but nothing central.

Lupita Nyong'o is superb. The cat is great (best sci-fi cat since Jonesy?). Even the guy from Stranger Things is great in a completely different way. Yes, there are plenty of jump scares, tension, and alien violence. But I enjoyed it more for the emotional story. This was written and directed by the guy who did Pig. It has a similar vibe.

I'm posting in this forum to say that the Atmos phenomenal, like the previous films. But the visual quality is not like the others. It's not vibrant and filmic, but more muted. It's desaturated, has milky, raised blacks, low contrast. Reminds me a little of Bradford Young's somewhat derided "naturalistic" cinematography in Arrival and Solo. Looking at the YouTube trailers, they seem to have a much brighter SDR grade. So set your expectations appropriately. This one may garner complaints from it's visual style compared to the others.

Steelbook preorder is on Amazon.

A Quiet Place: Day One 4K Blu-ray Steelbook

If that’s the front cover of the non-exclusive, I’m okay with it.

The Walmart exclusive is horrendous.

This is the first time Paramount has used predominantly red artwork on a steelbook that I don't hate. (and it kinda-sorta works with the BB steelie for part 2, though the other steelbook has a color scheme to fit with the mondo for part 1) Ordered that (apparently?) Walmart exclusive of the red one.

Default Question regarding Dolby Atmos Features

Hi,

I would like to know that since A Quiet Place: Day One [1080p Blu-ray] & 4k Bluray discs contain Dolby Atmos, is the quality (bitrate) of the Atmos for both discs are the same? I assume it should be, meaning only the picture bitrate will be higher on the 4K compared to the 1080p Bluray but the Dolby Atmos will still be the same file size or quality. Anyone can clarify this please?

Furthermore, any comments on the current trend that studios only provide 4K format of the movie as a physical disc and the 1080p bluray formats are absent in the packing, however, the price of the 4K and the native 1080p Bluray price are packed separately and their prices are kept increasing. Is this really fair to the consumers? Should the native bluray formats (1080p) should be priced more cheaper than the 4K?

Yes, it’s the same track.

Regarding the trend towards 4K-only releases, they’re inevitable.

I don’t mind 4K only, but prices above $40 are tough to swallow.

If both discs are sourced from the same master, then I won't care about the BD.

But when new editions bring the same old BDs, I like to have them just to be safe. Some UHDs are like... a sideways upgrade, so to speak.
