I always loved the Muppet one, and the 1951 version, but now, my all time favorite goes to the new Walt Disney version in CGI. Simply one of the best adaptation of that novel, and visualy impressive.

I have a soft spot for Mickey's Christmas Carol (which isn't available on Blu-ray, yet) since that was my introduction to the story. In terms of straight-forward adaptations, though, the George C. Scott and Disney's CG one are both top notch. The Muppet Christmas Carol is also surprisingly more sincere than you might expect, but that one's supposedly not coming on Blu-ray till March in a Muppets boxed set from Disney.

It all depends...Even though I'm only in my early 30's As far as timeless classics? I grew up with The 1951 film "A Christmas Carol", starring Alastair Sim and The 1970 musical "Scrooge" starring Albert Finney both being played continuously when i was a child growing up and both have become tradition to me on many levels. Both are on Blu-ray...
As far as my Favorite? Hands down Scrooged, starring Bill Murray. I also have a soft spot for Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol. |

George C. Scott for sure. A wonderful film, and more accurate to the book than the (also wonderful) Alastair Sim version which adds many sequences to Christmas past. Those are by far the best adaptations.
I'm surprised by the love for the Disney one. It certainly has some wonderful moments, but it's too in love with its technology. Time and again it kills an emotionally effective moment with a "Gee Whiz!" action sequence. The worst is Scrooge getting shrunken to the size of a mouse during the scene where his possessions are getting sold off by thieves. Instead of old Ebeneezer's growing horror as he slowly realizes his fate, he's busy . . . being chased by a mouse. ![]() Parts of it are great, but it can't decide if it's a somber, faithful re-telling, or a slap-stick cartoon. George C. for the win! Last edited by charlieray1; 11-29-2011 at 01:57 AM. |
