Default ALL Bestbuy's in my area sold out of 80GB

I'm so annoyed. I want to buy it at BB so I can get the 2 year plan and swap it out if it breaks on me. BUT, I went to 2 stores and played online and the closest BB that has the 80 in stock is an hour away. No Thanks. I asked 3 stores and they said they dont expect them until Mid February. That is quite strange to me.

Now I have to figure out if I want to buy it at CC or Gamestop and hope and pray it doesnt break.

Same for me.

I have an 80gb I got a few days after Christmas that is way louder than my 60gb, and I've been trying to exchange it within the 30day window.

They told me they are sold out company wide, and stores that have them just haven't sold what was there before Christmas.

At this point I am about to return it and get the balance on a gift card so when I see one I can grab it. I had over $100 in reward coupons applied to it, and that just takes forever to get them back if I did a straight return.

I live in Apex, NC - and nowhere around us has it.

Why not get it from Amazon? Same price, no tax, free shipping, and their 2-year warranty is only $29.99. I think the use local service companies.

I've owned a half-dozen consoles over the years and never had one break... not even a controller.

Have you not received the rrod with your 360 yet? I bought the BB warranty so I could just swap it out too. I also noticed their 360's are completely sold out too. wtf.

What happens if your ps3 dies on you from amazon? I'd have to ship it to them and they send one back or would I have to go thru Sony's BS?

You can order online and probably get it in a few days. Do your rewards certificates work online?

Amazon really is the best place to buy, in terms of total cost to you. The PS3 is totally different from the 360 in terms of reliability so I wouldn't really worry about that. Besides if it does break you still have the Sony 1 year warranty. After a year's time $500 isn't gonna be worth much assuming you have a decent job. And prices will have probably dropped again at that time making a repurchase cheaper.

Think about it, how many news stories have you heard of PS3s breaking?

Plus in the off chance it does break after the warranty, the out of warranty repair is only $150 no matter what is wrong with it.

My issue is that I already used those certificates, and am just trying to exchange it for a different 80gb PS3.

So to do a return means waiting 6-8 weeks to get the certs. back (so Best Buy CS tells me), or I can return it and get the balance on a BB Gift Card.

Thats fine with me since I am going to pick it up the day I can find one.

Hmm, this is pretty interesting. You see, just last week Sony announced they were discontinuing both the 20gb and 60gb PS3s in Japan, effectively leaving only the 40gb model on the market. As of yet, there hasn't been an announcement of the 80gb model coming to Japan, and from the Japanese press release, it seems Sony is content with focusing on the CECHH00 (40gb model) series of PS3 from now on, at least in Japan. What that says to me, is that the current 40gb model is now going to be the standard PS3, and while they might add some ehancements to it, like maybe a larger HDD in the future, I think we might have seen the last of having actual hardware built into the PS3 for backward compatibility. This could be a reason why the 80gb model isn't in stock at so many stores...

Anyway, here's the actual press release from Sony (in Japanese though, sorry)

Strange, even here in Europe we only have the 40GB model from now.
If they only sell the 40GB in Japan also seems strange they will keep 80GB in North America only.

Seems they want totally remove the PS2 compatibility.

We will see but if we have to choose one model only I prefer the 80GB.
I love SACD and some of the old PS2 games.

Once again a strange movement from SONY. 4 models in 1 year and half and only one now available

I don't have a link, but I read somewhere that Sony was planning on making the 40GB the standard model. I also read that it's possible that it can play PS2 games with a firmware, but it's only speculation.

I read before the PS3 launched that Sony was originally planning to keep the PS2 hardware inside all PS3s for backward compatibility, until they were able to get software emulation up to speed. Then they were going to remove the PS2 hardware and rely on software emulation completely. I guess Sony was rushed in removing the PS2 hardware so they could quickly reduce the price of the PS3. Anyway, I'm hoping we're going to see a software implementation come out for the 40gb model, rather than have Sony abandon backward compatibility all together. But since the 40gb model is doing so well without it, it certainly is possible that Sony would drop backwards compatibility altogether.

The real reason they dropped the backwards compatibility for the 40 gb model is because they wanted people to buy the new PS3 games, not because it wasn't possible.

I purchased my 60 GB PS3 from Circuit City and got a 3-year warranty plan for about $180 and I also got the 1-yr warranty from Gamestop for $49 on my 80 GB PS3. Best Buy is not the only B&M store that offers extended warranties. Circuit City's warranty is just as good.

Interestingly enough, I purchased both my 60GB & 80GB PS3 under the assumption that I need the PS2 backwards compatibility, however, to this day, I have probably played my PS2 games only about 5x since I have purchased my PS3s. I for one, definitely, enjoy playing the PS3 games more due to the advanced graphics, etc. I just cannot stand the lowered graphics of the PS2 games anymore... lol.
