Snakes on a Plane was a movie that I remember being hyped online for months ahead of its release. It was supposed to be a kind of second coming of Rocky Horror Picture Show in camp and at least one video was posted online with the audience being rowdy and throwing a beach ball around and having a good time. People obviously loved the name of the film. It was one of the first examples I can really recall since perhaps the original Blair Witch and The Sixth Sense with a lot of viral appeal. I was so hyped about it at the time that I even called the theater ahead of the showing and asked if there were any seats available and the guy laughed because apparently only a handful of them had been sold in a large auditorium. I remember being fairly bored by the movie and it seemed like a lot of it was just waiting for Sam Jackson to say the R rated line. Kenan Thompson also played a character without funny lines and with nothing to work with. Even with Jackson this one probably could've been a dtv movie. I'd still like to give it another watch, though.

If a DVD I own is upgraded to Blu-ray, or if a Blu-ray I own is upgraded significantly enough to buy it, I'll donate the older disc to our local Animal Aid thrift store.

donating to a thrift store (especially a local one) is a better thing to do than throwing them in the dumpster

If you have the means and are able to I would highly recommend donating them to your local library instead of throwing them away. The library would love to have them as they usually have zero budget for media outside of donations....

Im pretty good about NOT buying things either blindly or that I dont feel will have rewatch value. But, there are always exceptions or movies that you might have liked but dont care to watch anymore. A few recently Ive parted with:

Signs
Total Recall

Thats all I can think of right now.

Check with your library first because this is not always the case. Many libraries have limited space and actually are budgeted for certain materials that have to be vetted first for appropriateness. When a lot of people with good intentions dump "donations" at their doorstep, they just wind up having to throw all that stuff out themselves and it costs them time and manpower.

This is true in certain areas. I just know at the one I work at and the others in the area we’ll take mostly anything usable. At the end of the day we can always put it on the 2 for a $1 table or send them to even less funded affiliates.
