Default The 6 Degrees Collection (1989-2003)

Mill Creek will be releasing a Kevin Bacon 6-Film Collection, which includes several films previously released by them, but also includes Where The Truth Lies, which I believe is a first for the format, so that's primarily what I decided to make this thread about.

Quote:

It’s 6 degrees of sizzling hot Bacon with this diverse collection of films across the award-winning actor’s extensive career. From a med student with a desire for dying to a comedy legend shrouded in mystery, this versatile actor is a master of the acting craft!

The Big Picture
(1989) - Color - 1 Hour 41 Minutes - PG-13

Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Jason Leigh, J.T. Walsh, Teri Hatcher, Martin Short, Michael McKean

An Inside Look At How NOT To Get A Movie Made.

Today's Hollywood is hilariously lampooned in The Big Picture, a behind the scenes look at the costs of making it in the hip and happening world of show business. Kevin Bacon stars as Nick Chapman, a naïve kid from Ohio who wins the Best Student Film award form the prestigious National Film Institute. Suddenly hot, Nick jumps out of the ivory tower headlong into the Hollywood fast lane, where he's seduced by manic agents, power happy producers, and the irresistibly quirky Jennifer Jason Leigh. Giving in to temptation, Nick sells out, sacrificing his friends, his true love and his self-respect. But when his career comes to a screeching halt, his dream turns into a comic nightmare and he discovers beneath the Hollywood tinsel lies a system that breaks 'em as fast as it make 'em.

Flatliners

(1990) - Color - 1 Hour 54 Minutes - R
Keifer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, Kimberly Scott

Some lines shouldn't be crossed.

“Flatliners is an original, intelligent thriller” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Medical students begin to explore the realm of near death experiences, hoping for insights. Each has their heart stopped and is revived. They begin having flashes of walking nightmares from their childhood, reflecting sins they committed or had committed against them. The experiences continue to intensify, and they begin to be physically beaten by their visions as they try and go deeper into the death experience to find a cure.

“Flatliners is a strikingly original, often brilliantly visualized film” – Variety

“a heart-stopping, breathtakingly sumptuous haunted house of a movie” – Rita Kempley, Washington Post

Hollow Man

(2000) - Color - 1 Hour 52 Minutes - R

Elisabeth Shue, Kevin Bacon, Josh Brolin, Kim Dickens, Joey Slotnick, William Devane

What would you do if you were invisible? How far would you go? After years of experimentation, Dr. Sebastian Caine, a brilliant but arrogant and egotistical scientist working for the Defense Department, has successfully transformed mammals to an invisible state and brought them back to their original physical form. Determined to achieve the ultimate breakthrough, Caine instructs his team to move on to Phase III: human experimentation. Using himself as the first subject, the invisible Caine finds himself free to do the unthinkable.

Trapped

(2002) - Color - 1 Hour 46 Minutes - R

Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend, Kevin Bacon, Courtney Love

“The movie is gripping all the way”… – dvdempire.com, D.W.Pritchett

From the producer of Thelma & Louise comes a white knuckle, edge of your seat thriller starring Charlize Theron (Snow White and the Huntsman), Courtney Love (The People vs. Larry Flint), Stuart Townsend (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class). When their daughter is taken for ransom by a gang of serial kidnappers, a young doctor and his wife find themselves held hostage while a 24 hour plan to extort their money is set into motion. With time running out and the health of their asthmatic daughter at serious risk, they find themselves in a race against the clock as the “perfect crime” begins spiraling towards an unthinkable, terrifying and deadly conclusion.

In The Cut

(2003) - Color - 1 Hour 59 Minutes - R

Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Jason Leigh

“Meg Ryan is dynamite in the most explosive performance of her career,” – David Moss, FOX TV

This sensual thriller features Meg Ryan (You’ve Got Mail) and Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers) in unforgettable performances as they search for a killer who knows their every move, and knows they’re getting too close for comfort. In the underbelly of lower Manhattan, Frannie Avery (Ryan), a reserved English professor, becomes obsessed after seeing more than she should of an impassioned couple. After the young woman turns up dead, Frannie is questioned by a homicide detective (Ruffalo) who draws her into a liberating but disturbing erotic encounter. As the body count rises, familiar suspects begin to emerge.

Where the Truth Lies

(2005) - Color - 1 Hour 47 Minutes - Not Rated

Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, David Hayman
A female journalist, Karen O'Conner tries to uncover the truth behind the breakup, years earlier, of a celebrated comedy team after the duo found a girl dead in their hotel room. Though both had airtight alibis and neither was accused, the incident put an end to their act.

I don't own any of these on Blu-ray, and the price will probably be right.

I'm a fan of Where the Truth Lies. It's an extremely disturbing film, but very well-done.

I've seen all of the other movies in the set as well, and they all range from decent to excellent.

However, this package gets a huge pass from me. I don't mind getting sets of movies together, but if this has only 2 Blu's & 6 films, then that means 3 films will be on a disc. That's a little too much, and the PQ will suffer as a result. That being said, the PQ may still be slightly better than the DVD, but probably not much better.

I based it off their sell sheet, which says 2 discs. It's 11 hours of films, so it would have to be. Mill Creek is pretty bad when it comes to compressing films, but I don't think they'd squeeze 11 hours onto one disc

Welp...

The DTS-HD MA tracks previously available will probably by 448kbs Dolby Digital 5.1 and/or Dolby 2.0 to fit them properly.

Choices.

Where The Truth Lies is a fantastic film. But as others have mentioned, the lack of individual discs is a dealbreaker. Maybe someone like Indicator in the UK can get this title for their range. Also am I the only one who hates In the Cut?

Never thought Where the Truth Lies would make it to Blu-ray at this point, so I ended up buying the DVD from a thrift store a couple of years ago. I'll probably get this, since it's a ton of movies for what will probably be a cheap price.

If the specs are right, "IN THE CUT" will be the R version instead of the uncut unrated version Mill Creek released earlier. Or it's just a typo. "Where the Truth Lies" is still the Unrated version, so it's not about being ratings safe for all retailers.

"Where the Truth Lies" is a terrific Egoyan film, but I just feel really cheap buying this type of multi-pack, especially by actor and including a bunch of films I don't want in my collection. I can handle an occasional double-feature release, but this is sending me back to all those Brentwood DVD multi-packs.

I think I'll just stick with the standalone DVD of "WTTL" for now. It just seems more respectful to the film.

Since none of these films really have anything in common outside of featuring Bacon, Mill Creek should have called it the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Collection" and had some fun with it.

What's interesting for me is that, outside of The Hollow Man, I don't own any of the films in this set:

The Big Picture: Amusing late '80's film, but probably my least favorite film in this set. That being said, it would be nice to have this on Blu.

Flatliners: Superb & atmospheric horror/suspense film - one of my favorites.

In the Cut: One of my favorite 200X dramas. Really liked the NYC setting, storyline, and acting; very underrated & disturbing.

Trapped: Decent film, and also underrated. Bacon plays a great psychopath in this. I'm a big fan of the pop/rock group Hole, so it was nice to see Courtney Love here as well.

Where the Truth Lies: Obviously, the gem of the set here.

So, if this were being handled better - i.e., if there were three Blu's with two films on each individual Blu - I would be a lot more inclined to get this. None of these films are crappy or terrible.

However, the fact that they're shoving three films on one Blu reeks of cheapness & just trying to make a quick buck - instead of going the extra mile and including just one more Disk. This is akin to DVD's back in the 200X's having multiple films on one side and/or being double-sided (resulting in crappy PQ, and/or the increased chances of scratched disks). This was obviously done by these companies to save money...all to the detriment of the consumer/collector.

More Atom Egoyan is always good news. I was going to get the iTunes version soon, but now need to think about which one I should go for... Ah, the set actually has The Hollow Man, so I might go for this set instead.

BTW, Where the Truth Lies is NR (not rated) on iTunes while In the Cut is rated R. Maybe it’s the decision by Sony to let Mill Creek release the R rated version (since the Unrated version has the hardcore insert)?

Mill Creek has already released In the Cut (in a two pack with Trapped) and it was the unrated version, I'd be very surprised if they didn't include the exact same version.

Never have seen Where the Truth Lies and never did pick up In the Cut/Trapped before it went oop. So this set looks good for those - already have the others.

Where the Truth Lies is a pretty solid film. Plus, it has Alison Lohman in it and she doesn't really act much anymore.
