Talking The INSTRUMENTAL Thread

Instrumentals: we've heard of a couple once in a while. So, what are some of your favorite instrumentals? It can be from any genre, so I'm eager to see some of your favorites.

Here are mine:

"YYZ "- Rush
"La Villa Strangiato" -Rush
"2112: Overture" - Rush
"Bron-Yr-Aur" - Led Zeppelin
"Cans and Brahms" - Yes
"Mood For A Day" - Yes
"Any Colour You Like" - Pink Floyd

So what are yours?

My favorite is "Jacques Cousteau" by Erasure. Technically Vince Clarke wrote it so... I guess half of Erasure.

Also: Every Little Thing - (When) Will It Rain

I probably know of lots if we count music from movie soundtracks.

Otherwise, these come to mind:

Def Leppard, "Switch 625"
Lacuna Coil, "Un Fantasma Tra Noi"

Sirius by The Alan Parsons Project. Not necessarily for its technical merit, but just because it has a really cool vibe/sound.

I've got hundreds of instrumental rock songs I could put on this list. That's probably my favorite genre or sub-genre of music.

A pretty hard one to top that everyone knows is YYZ like you mentioned, and is one of my faves, but you've also got staples like Orion that shan't be forgotten. Might as well throw in (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth since we're talking about Metallica.

Certainly one of my favorites is Funeral for a Friend by Elton John. Certainly not what most of think of when people think of him.

I like that one a lot, and it's probably the only Elton John song I actually "like." I think that's not quite within the definition of "instrumental," though, as there are definitely lyrics in that song.

Not exactly. It segues into Love Lies Bleeding, which has lyrics.

Check the play listing on the CD and/or the LP. It is easier to tell on the vinyl album as well. But, as JamesN indicates they are 2 separate songs and Funeral for a Friend runs right into Love Lies Bleeding which is a separate song.

Funeral for a Friend is a good song for the road. Being a huge jazz fan, most of the music in my collection is instrumental. In terms of rock/pop artists, I'd probably go with:
Jeff Beck--Since We've Ended as Lovers
Frank Zappa--Zoot Allures, The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution
Spirit--Space Child
Allman Brothers--In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Little Martha
Santana--Song of the Wind, El Fuente del Ritmo, Aspirations, Promise of a Fisherman
Joe Satriani--Borg Sex
Jimi Hendrix--Third Stone from the Sun
Beastie Boys--Sneakin' Out the Hospital
ZZ Top--Apologies to Pearly
Stevie Ray Vaughan--Rude Mood

Correct. You got me on the technicality.

This situation is kind of like Foreplay/Long Time by Boston. I mean yeah they're different tracks/songs, but if they're played separately neither is as good on their own. I'd say let's put Foreplay on the list then.

Another example of a two song combo that is rarely separated is Heartbreaker and Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman) by Led Zeppelin, although that doesn't qualify for this thread because those are very heavy with lyrics.

Agreed. Foreplay is considered an instrumental for now.

Generally instrumental music outside of classical music leaves me bored, but I adore "Tacoma Trailer" off Leonard Cohen's album, The Future.

Great selection there quirkmanly.

I specially loved that vid of the spinning 45 for Steeled Blues

I now see how Led Zeppelins "You Shook Me" was influenced by it.

Epics! We could go on for days with Beck jams. Here's one I'll throw at you: Scatterbrain

Some others I love (not Jeff Beck):

Also Sprach Zarathustra by Deodato
Instrumental Illness by Allman Brothers

I'm tempted to bust out some Malmsteen references, but I'm nit sure if the congregation is ready for that yet.
