USA Belly 4K UHD (1998)

Lionsgate will be releasing Belly on 4K UHD on January 24th!

Quote:
Ever since they were kids, Sincere (Nas) and Buns (DMX) have lived life close to the edge, doing whatever it takes to survive. As adults, they build up their kingdom of crime on drug dealing and robbery. But Sincere grows weary of the criminal lifestyle and joins a black Muslim religious group. Buns, on the other hand, sinks deeper into criminality and faces serious prison time. The cops offer him a deal, however -- assassinate the head of the Muslim group, and he will go free.

Man I thought this was the shit BITD, tried rewatching it recently after 20+ years and it just didn't hold up.

The use of Kurt Loder and MTV News to introduce some exposition felt really shoehorned and awkward.

Love this movie and the 4K should look and sound amazing. Very excited for it!

HYPE!

I was lucky enough to catch this at a rep screening last year in 35mm. The film still looks as amazing as ever.

I still like this movie so maybe it hasn't fallen as far out of my favor as it has yours, though it definitely no longer has the kick that it did back in 1998 for me. Some of the diminishment in appreciation may be attributable to tastes changing with age, but perhaps a bigger factor is the merits and flaws of the film itself.

Story was never the strong point for this movie, as Hype Williams seems to have emphasized style over substance at almost every turn. The artistic flashiness employed here seemed fairly innovative when it was released, evoking the same visceral enjoyment of cinematic bravado as I had watching Natural Born Killers a few years earlier or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the same year as Belly.

The issue I have with the movie now though is that once you take away the flash, there is very little left. The narrative is very lean and the non-actors are okay, but not great, in their parts. Malik Sayeed's cinematography is still a highlight for me, and I do still like a lot of what Hype Williams brought to this. Overall I'm still enough of a fan that I'm happy for the 4K release.

Something that isn't really appreciable to anyone who didn't see this when it first came out is that it's set in the future (though only by a few months). Watching it today and having the movie tell you it's happening in 1999 has no impact, but in 1998 it added a little something to the viewing experience that can't be recaptured.

One of the best intros to a movie ever, but kind of wasted potential. RIP DMX

Oh yeah!
getting this for the opening alone.

Hopefully Hype Williams can work with the labels to release his music videos
on a 4K disc (will settle for a Blu-ray)

Man, I'm with you on this idea. Remastered Hype Williams music video collection? That would be the ultimate nostalgia trip.
