Default Star Wars: Rogue One SPOILER Discussion (for those who have already seen the film)

I created the Star Wars: The Force Awakens SPOILER Discussion Thread last year, so I'd like to do the same for Star Wars: Rogue One.

I'd love to read discussions of Star Wars: Rogue One without having to click on spoiler tags all of the time, so this thread is intended for feedback from those who have already seen the film.

I'll be seeing the movie tomorrow night, so I'll stay away from my own thread for the next day or so.

Moderators, feel free to delete this thread if it's overkill in the forum, but I think that it's the right thing to do.

If you have not yet seen Star Wars: Rogue One, then be forewarned that HERE THERE BE SPOILERS!

Now the internet jerks are going to pass that around and ruin it for others, even if it's just putting up screenshots. Don't even bother spreading that crap or making it known.

I get that this is the society we live in now where everyone has to spread everything or be "the first" to see something or know something but can't we all just enjoy things without spoiling them for other people? It's all upsetting and makes me happy I saw the movie at a preview screening.

People are seriously just the worst.

We got a Norwegian Princess Leia Scene was too short to tell if they have done any Carrie Fisher superimposing on her, but looked very nice from what I could see

The Vader scene at the end really crowned a stellar movie. Totally unexpected and totally AWESOME!!

They also did an excellent job of keeping all the tech in Ep 4 style making for a seemless transition, thats one of the things I was most afraid of going in.

I will say that my nitpicks are as follows:

The Crawl: It really should still be there. It's a great "jumping off" point for the audience and really excites everyone for what they're about to see. I also miss the cheer from the audience. This just feels completely dead at the beginning and probably doesn't help that the first 20 minutes, or so, are pretty boring with exposition and setting everyone up. None of the other 7 films have that problem.

The title card: God I felt like I was watching a TV show when that lame music hit. Generic and dull in comparison to how grandiose the other movies are at the beginning. I wouldn't have even put a title card there. Just keep the movie moving.

The music: Comparatively, it sucks. Granted, almost everyone compared to JW sucks but, really, it's almost like he didn't try. What seems like Jyn's theme sounds like a re-purposed "Across the Stars." The only non-JW Star Wars music that, to my ears, was phenomenal was Joel McNeely's Shadows of the Empire. I still listen to that regularly. He really did an amazing job.

The haircuts. No one in the background really had 70's haircuts, that I saw, especially the pilots. If you wanted to match it up, you'd think that they'd try to have them match.

Otherwise, I really loved it. I have no major issues with a majority of the film and I certainly didn't need to think about it like I did TFA. Can't wait to see it again on Thursday.

Music bothered me abit too. Atleast there is a section from starwars theme at the very end of the credits

There's no guarantee it would have been any better. The only reason Michael gets any leeway is that he only had 4 weeks to write the whole score. But, still, there's really very little memorable here. The only part I liked was the music of them crash landing on the rain planet.

So were they 'ordered' to stay away from SW theme, or is it a creative choice ?

I'm sure it was a "creative choice," regardless.

Every time Donnie Yen's theme would play I would think it was about to break into Across the Stars. It's ridiculous how similar the intro is.

Someone on JWFan said it was his but I didn't get that impression at all. And since the soundtrack isn't out, we don't know

Default Star Wars: Rogue One SPOILER Discussion (for those who have already seen the film)

I wish that they hadn't done the CG Tarkin / Leia. Really took me out of the movie!

I read on this forum that C-3PO and R2-D2 are on Yavin at the end of Rogue One and not on the Tantive IV, is this correct?

I'll quote my take of the film here, uncensored.

Positives:
  • Opening - no crawl, and the title on screen is simply Rogue One, which is great as I don't like "A Star Wars Story" label
  • Plot, engaging story and entertaining
  • Jyn Erso's backstory
  • Well written main and supporting characters
  • Climactic space and ground battle
  • Flaws of the Death Star vulnerability explained and actually makes sense although not perfectly, see the negatives list
  • Imaginative new planets
  • Cinematography and designs (this time the ships from the original trilogy makes sense)
  • Darth Vader
  • A bit dark and gritty but not as much as I expected, this is no Saving Private Ryan

Negatives:
  • Very, very bad CGI recreations of Leia and Tarkin. They look creepy. Some Pixar animations look more believable than this, kind of embarassing really
  • Sometimes felt like a more adult, expensive, extended episode of Rebel, but I guess it's minor a issue because this is not the main saga after all
  • Pacing very odd, especially the first act, and felt rushed
  • Actors' performances look unnatural sometimes, especially interactions between them
  • Saw Gerrera underutilized
  • Vader's voice sounds a little off, could be because of James Earl Jones age
  • Still doesn't explain why the Empire didn't learn their lesson and put an almost similar flaw in Death Star II (and III)
  • R2 and 3PO were left behind on Yavin, but in Episode IV they're in Tantive IV with Leia
  • I find Leia smiling at the end is inappropriate, even though they got the plan so many died just a few minutes before
  • Didn't know that the Death Star has hyperdrives to go into lightspeed, if so why didn't it come out of lightspeed closer to Yavin in Episode IV
  • I thought the Death Star plans were beamed to Tantive IV via some kind of transmission, Leia then copied into a data card and hide it inside R2, not the data card itself transferred physically to her ship,I'll have to watch Episode IV again
  • It doesn't make sense that Leia wasn't around during all the rebellion meetings, when she was there in the final battle, all just to make her appearance at the end more dramatic

Question to those who have seen it, what is the planet where Krennic went to see Vader? Is it Mustafar?

Again, overall it's a good entry into the universe, but I'm glad it's not part of the main saga. Because of that I'll rank them separately:

THE SKYWALKER SAGA

A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

THE ANTHOLOGY

Rogue One
Somebody has to confirm about when they showed the R2/3PO scene, it could be during the "Rogue One" group flying off Scariff which should be fine. But if it was during the Rebellion armada flying off, then it implied that they're left behind.

Vader's planet more or less confirmed as Mustafar.

Also, as Galen designed the flaw of the Death Star, why didn't just make a copy of the plan and physically give to Bodhi, instead of just the hologram mesage?

Didn't you already state in your review of Rogue One that 3PO and R2 were left behind on Yavin?

Yes I did, that's what I remember seeing, but I could be wrong because I just recalled there's another scene of ships leaving Yavin. I would like to give a benefit of doubt to give the film some chances, I'm not here to bash it. I can't possiblily remember every detail with one viewing.

I just assumed C3PO and R2D2 were where they needed to be. My recollection is that you only saw them once, quite early on, when the Rogue One fleet left. It's quite plausible that they were put on the ship they needed to be on...

Also, bad CGI representations of a dead actor and a much much older one?? Pixar?? Are you guys mad?? The CGI was immense, to say that they interacted with humans.

I think that I'd do a much better job of remembering everything in a movie as big as this one. I need to start taking into consideration that other people out in the world on the internet is either younger or older than I am with faulty memories.

Considering there are three or four separate "take off from Yavin" scenes within a short amount of time, I'd be impressed if you could keep them straight after a first viewing.
