United Kingdom The Missing Picture

The Missing Picture Blu-ray

NEWS/TRAILER
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=12855

Quote:
Independent British distributors New Wave Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray director Rithy Panh's documentary film L'image manquante a.k.a The Missing Picture (2013). Earlier this year, the film won Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is March 24th.

Documentary detailing the horrors of the Cambodian genocide which occurred under the Pol Pot dictatorship of the late-1970s. Using clay animation as a way of illustrating the undocumented experience of the common people, film-maker Rithy Panh tells the story of how he and his family were taken from their home in the city and forced to work in rural labour camps as part of the Khmer Rouge's social engineering policies. Not only did Panh witness first-hand a number of atrocities, including routine executions and widespread malnutrition, as a result, his own father starved himself to death as a way of protesting against the regime.

was the image cropped ? because the database says 1.85 but what I saw this afternoon in the theater (I thought) was dual AR 2.35 and 1.33

The original UK trailer came with 1.85:1 ratio and mixed 1.37:1, so one of these needed to go in the database. Are you saying that the 1.85:1 footage should be in 2.39:1?

yes, as I can recall all the diorama/clay figure scenes were shot in scope (2.35) most of the 'live action' shots were centered in the middle of the screen featured in 16mm's AR of 1.37

I have not seen the film theatrically, but the framing on the trailer is clearly not a mistake (what I mean is that this is how New Wave Films dispatched it). We will have to wait and see what ends up on the Blu-ray, but one of these two ratios then will have to be the official ratio. (Unless some reframing has been done with the director's approval).

so even if it's been altered the original theatrical AR (of 2.35) is not the official ratio - I don't get that logic.

Dubstar,

Let me check on this because I don't have enough information at the moment and I don't like speculating.

yeah, maybe I've officially gotten loopy - Sight and Sound's review also lists 1.85

question, and maybe someone can enlighten me to how this got an Academy Award Foreign Film nomination and not a Documentary nomination - it seemed more like the latter to me.

Think it's technically both, not seen it but it seems that way. Is a bit weird though, as The Act Of Killing is the same kind of thing (blurs the line between fact and fiction) and is nominated for Best Documentary...no idea what the nomination process is about. Maybe it was submitted by Cambodia (or France) to represent them this year and was submitted as foreign film rather than documentary? Think it has the added bonus of being made and endorsed by its native country, whereas The Act Of Killing has been shunned by the Indonesian government (despite being hugely popular in public).

Only £10.99 from HMV on Monday if anyone's interested! A good price for a blind-buy in my opinion.

The site listing shows Regions A and C "untested". Can anyone who owns this disc confirm if it is Region B locked or Region Free? Thanks in advance.
