‘Constantine’ Reboot In The Works At HBO Max From J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot With Guy Bolton Set As Writer



J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is developing a darker reboot of DC Comics’ Constantine for HBO Max with Guy Bolton set to write.

Deadline understands that Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is working with the WarnerMedia streamer on the reboot, which will see the character as a young Londoner. We hear that Bolton has written the pilot script with plans to open a writers room in March.

The character is set to be cast as a diverse lead, a departure from the one played by Matt Ryan in the NBC series, which aired for one season between 2014-2015. That series was developed by David Goyer and Daniel Cerone and similarly based on the DC Comics character John Constantine, a British exorcist and occult detective who hunts the supernatural.

Ryan also appeared as the character in The CW’s Arrow and as a series regular in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, all part of the Arrowverse.

It is the latest project Bad Robot has at HBO Max; last April, the streamer revealed that it had greenlit Overlook, inspired by Stephen King’s The Shining; Duster; and a DC Justice League Dark show.

Bolton is a fledgling writer out of the UK. He previously wrote two books, The Pictures, which has been sold to Hell or High Water and Outlaw King director David Mackenzie and his production company Sigma Films for a feature adaptation, and The Syndicate. He is also working on The Croupier, an original pilot script that is in development with Gentleman Jack producer Lookout Point and Sky.

In December, as part of Deadline’s piece on British writers to watch out for in 2021, he told us that he’d been very “fortunate” to work with Bad Robot and highlighted the “thoughtful” notes he received.

This article smells kinda fishy no way would they look for a POC actor to play Constantine. they know how popular the character is right now and that would piss off hardcore hellblazer fans.

Why can't we keep characters just the way the always have been?

I understand why they wouldn't get Matt Ryan since he's firmly in the Arrowverse now and this most likely will not be... but I'm of the mindset that a character shouldn't have race/gender changed just for the sake of it, unless it's done in the source material first (Nick Fury for example.. or you get Jessica Alba playing Chris Evan's sister lol). I want to give it a shot but if they're changing his race and taking away some of the story elements, it's kind of already setting out on the wrong path IMO. I'll wait and see how the show actually comes together if it makes it to "air" and decide on my commitment then lol

If they end up making him not be British, I'm out.

Rumor is they have found a black actor to play John

The Illuminerdi is reporting that the streaming service is currently eyeing Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù (Gangs of London) to take on the title role in the series that comes from UK author Guy Bolton and executive producer J.J. Abrams. The British Nigerian actor put himself on the map with an unmissable performance in Netflix's horror movie His House, and Dìrísù would no doubt bring a lot to this DC role.

However, sources tell Variety that the HBO Max series is now dead, although the streamer had been in early talks with an actor for the lead role before the new movie came together. Four scripts were written on the new adaptation set in contemporary London.

But this doesn’t mean both series can’t be resurrected somewhere else. Sources say that both Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot remain extremely high on both projects and expect to find a new home for them both.

I'm curious what the plans are for HBOmax because it seems like all they're doing is canceling or removing things. Also the Matt Ryan Constantine series was by far superior to that Lucifer show and deserved to be save before that thing did.
