Default Flash Gordon 4K UHD (1980)

Flash Gordon 4K Blu-ray Limited Edition

Flash Gordon 4K Blu-ray

https://www.diabolikdvd.com/product/...hd-all-region/

Quote:
Description
“PATHETIC EARTHLINGS… WHO CAN SAVE YOU NOW?

Super producer Dino De Laurentiis (Dune, Barbarella) brought Alex Raymond’s beloved cartoon strip and the long running movie serial to the big screen with celebrated director Mike Hodges (Get Carter, Black Rainbow) at the helm, in a delirious space opera, where Flash is King of the Impossible!

Merciless Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow) decides to wreak havoc on Earth in a moment of cruel boredom. Boarding a rocket as a means of escape, star quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones), Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) find themselves on Mongo. Taken prisoner Flash must save Dale from becoming Ming’s concubine, avoid the amorous intentions of Ming’s wicked daughter Aura (Ornella Muti) and unite the warring Kingdoms of Mongo.

With endlessly repeatable dialogue, inimitable camp style, the sonic stylings of Queen and a delightful band of characters and actors playing them it’s no wonder Flash Gordon has become one of the most beloved sci-fi spectacles of its era with directors such as Edgar Wright, Taika Waititi and Seth MacFarlane paying tribute to it in their work.

So this was "the other one" that Diabolik matey was referring to? I'm happy it's getting a US UHD release but I was hoping it'd be a different title.

One would hope this version wouldn’t be affected by any of SC’s potential encoding issues, though. Arrow doesn’t mess around with encoding.

Ah okay, then there shouldn’t be anything to worry about on either release.

A little disappointed Arrow is doing separate UHD and BD editions. Just make the LE a combo pack so people have to buy it if they want the extras.

Diabolik usually has pre-orders open before others. Amazon should have it next week.

I'm assuming so . Pitch Black seems to be their first one in the UK branch.

As said, Fidelity in Motion are handling Flash for SC.

It really wouldn't surprise me if David is also doing the Arrow 4K, he'd better be as there are a lot of extras they're stuffing on there alongside the movie (as there's no 1080p BD included).

Eh, some of their Engine House encodes could be tighter.

I have the Zavvi steelbook edition pre-ordered, which loses the soundtrack and Life after Flash. Someone should do a comparison between this one and the 3-disc Zavvi. I don't like that Diabolik charges you immediately.

Arrow is working with Studio Canal on the release so I’d guess both should be damn near equal transfers

Yep. Still better than what some other labels do, still not up to FiM's standards though.

It will literally be the exact same transfer, just with a different encode (though both will likely be done by FiM).

Yeah, I have to agree with this, especially with UHD being a region free format, and the Canal edition is looking more comprehensive and may even have a better encode (?!) if only because it seems like Arrow is asking the compressionist to jam a bunch of extras on their UHD disc, while Canal will go with less extras on the UHD and probably use a 100 GB disc, anyway.

I guess maybe David will do both encodes, but it could be wild to see unless the Canal specs change and the releases actually just end up using the exact same UHD encodes. We already know that the Canal release is coming in Germany and I assume it will go to France as well. Yes, there are a lot of old SD video extras, but it doesn't really make sense to me that stripping out the dubs and subtitles would give the Arrow UHD disc ample room for them along with what are some 1080 and possibly even 4K video extras.

EDIT: Then again, looking at The Elephant Man, David didn't need all the space for that feature and it is 12-13 minutes longer than Flash Gordon, so maybe there will be ample room for the extras on the Arrow UHD disc after all...
