Universal Studios Alexander Payne's The Holdovers (2023)

Focus Features (Universal) will be releasing Alexander Payne's The Holdovers (2023) on Blu-ray on January 2nd. The BD will include a few extras including deleted scenes, and an alternate ending. I saw this in theaters a couple weeks ago, and I consider it one of the best films of the year. Very entertaining, with great writing, and Giamatti is incredible in the role.

A curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school remains on campus during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students with nowhere to go. He soon forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker, and with the school's head cook, a woman who just lost a son in the Vietnam War.

My favorite film of 2023 so far. I wish it was a 4k disc since the digital is 4k HDR, but I’ll take a bluray copy.

It's up there for me as well. I may see it again in theater before Christmas.

DTS HD MA 3.0? I'm assuming that this is one of the creative decisions to make it as "70s" as possible, so I'm also assuming that a 5.1 mix doesn't exist.

Wanted to see this in theatres but I think I'll wait until after the holidays to nab this in the new year.

Agreed, since it doesn't look like it has a slip, I might wait it out and see if a 4K comes or when the blu gets super cheap. I am absolutely sick of buying a blu only to have the 4K come the next year.

Well, Downsizing already has a 4K release. Even if people don't like it, it still counts.

Also, the fact you forgot to even mention Election...

I knew about Downsizing… I have it.

Forgot about Election but I must say I like the 4 movies I mentioned way above these offerings….

I just pre-ordered it with Gruv and added a couple BD clearance items with it.

I really want to pre-order the Blu-ray, but is there any word on whether Universal will give this the Cocaine Bear / M3GAN / Violent Night treatment, and release a 4K disc before next Christmas? (See also: Black Phone and Promising Young Woman.)

Anything is possible, obviously. Universal never announces an upgrade, much less before the BD has even come out, so nobody knows right now.

That said, those are all cult/horror films. The audience for those films gladly rebuys reissued catalog titles.

Promising Young Woman is kind of an exception, but it has a cult following, and it was nominated for and won TONS of awards, and Universal had already committed to BD-only before those awards happened, and the UHD still took two years.

This is an indie arthouse film. There's no consumer base to buy those titles again a year after they came out.

Unless this film shocks everyone and sweeps the Oscars, I suspect this never gets a UHD.

Absolutely superb film.

Brilliantly written, directed and acted. Funny but moreso totally touching.

Definitely in my top 5 for the year.

This looked absolutely gorgeous right from the start at the cinema. Knew I was in for a treat during those opening credits in the snow. Will do my best to wait for a 4K release.

Same. I loved the opening scenes for this. Felt like a Norman Rockwell painting in motion.

I watched this with some family members last week and thought it was a decent movie. The trailer I saw at the theater a month or two ago made it look like a dumb comedy movie.

As far as retail outlets go, I looked for this today at Best Buy (nothing), Meijer (nothing), and Target. One Target that I visited had nothing, not even a spot for it on the shelf, while another Target had 3 copies. All had slipcovers. Did not check Walmart since I avoid doing business there (I don’t fancy being treated like a criminal anytime I need to return something - unopened with receipt and within the return period too, I might add).
