Fascinating documentary. Really enjoyed it. Fred Durst and John Scher are irresponsible morons.

I enjoyed this documentary a lot and was super excited to see it. I was 17 in ‘99 and had just graduated from HS. My buddies and I really thought of going to Woodstock’99 because we lived on the East coast and, god, what an experience it would have been. We decided not to which May have been the smartest decision my adolescent brain ever made. We did see Limp Bizkit in Pittsburgh later on that year and Fred Durst was still complaining about MTV’s treatment of him at Woodstock and had us chant, “F**k Kurt Loader!” All in all, this documentary does a good job at showing what music was popular during that time and the male aggression that lived off of it.

You mean you hadn’t heard of this Woodstock documentary, or did you mean you had never heard of the Woodstock festival(s) in general???

In general. I'm in the UK, and I was also 10 at the time of this. Shouldn't be so surprising..

Having said that, it made me enjoy it even more because what I was seeing was brand new to me. Intriguing shit to say the least

Fair enough! But anyways, consider yourself fortunate that you didn't really experience first-hand that brief but weird time when Limp Bizkit (ugh) were the suburban white kids' "band du jour" in the US in the late '90s. What were we thinking back then...haha.

There was a better documentary on HBO that aired back in 2000. It showed the concertgoers being taken to the hospital for overdosing and showing the generally poor planning of the event as the reason for the chaos. The overpriced food and water and stages being way too far from one another didn't help. All this documentary does is blame Girls Gone Wild, FHM, Maxim and the alleged Fight Club bro culture. Fight Club wasn't really popular when it was released, but it became a cult classic. Groping is horrible, but crowd surfing has those jerks who obviously aren't respectful. As for women wanting to be topless, its their body so they make the rules on what to do with it. The funniest part is where you have a white girl complaining about the fact that there were too many white guys at the fest. All of the people involved are reanalyzing the events through current year politics.

Haha, some very good points. And about the Fight Club thing…not only was it not popular yet at the time of Woodstock ‘99, it wasn’t even RELEASED yet! Woodstock ‘99 was in July, and Fight Club didn’t even come out in the US until October of ‘99. So bringing Fight Club into it at all was kinda weird and a stretch, definitely something lazily thrown in there.

It uses those things to contextualize the state of while male frat culture at the time quite appropriately. It blames the organizers and those who committed assault and vandalism.

I can still get down with some Korn songs from back in the day, yeah. I was a huge fan of them in my middle school days especially though (which would included the time of Woodstock '99).

Surely you must have heard of the original Woodstock though, even if you were unfamiliar with the follow-up '94 and '99 versions?

Yeah that is groan inducing. I get so sick of race permeating everything and the hypocrisy of statements like that. Imagine the inverse, someone attending an event and saying there's too many (fill in the blank) guys at the event. They'd be destroyed.

This was great, and incredibly nostalgic for me. I was 10 when Woodstock '99 happened and I had just gotten into MTV and was starting to listen to a lot of the bands that played the festival. I remember being glued to TRL and their coverage of the festival, then watching it permeate into the national news as it all went to hell.

If Doc Brown pulled up in his Flux Capacitor equipped DeLoreon and told me we could go back in time to different music festivals throughout history, Woodstock 99 might be the place I'd spend the least amount of time.

I ain't saying that because I disliked any of the music, in fact I'd love to see a lot of those bands, especially since many of them were in their prime.
As a teenager attending some other concerts and festivals going into the late 90's and early 2000's, Woodstock 99 was certainly on my radar back then.

The biggest festival I attended in the late 90's was Dallas Rockfest 97. Hardly ever talked about, but it was insanely crowded in the Texas summer heat, and like a lot of the Woodstock attendees, none of us teenagers were prepared for it. Most of us got in for free because Blockbuster Video was giving away tickets! How's that for 90's vibes!? A Blockbuster promoting a Music Festival!

Anyway, we were lucky that it was only one day, because so many of us were dehydrated and feeling like crap before sundown. Fortunately, it wasn't anywhere as chaotic or panic fueled as Woodstock 99 in part because the bands simply didn't bring that vibe.

I'm still interested in seeing this documentary though, I'm sure certain elements of it will trigger flashbacks to my other concert experiences around that time.
It was a very crazy time in music and a lot of us who were kids at the time listening to those bands can remember very vividly how weird and wild it was.
