Default De Palma - Snake Eyes (1998)

Didn't see an official thread.

I had a few questions:

1. Is there a "best" blu release for this? I think in March, 2021 there was a re-issue done. Not sure if there was any change in packaging - after a brief search, it looks like nothing but a straightvanilla release.

2. Are there rumors of a 4K planned? I think it did okay business at the time.

3. Without spoilers, is there a reason this was so panned by critics? Wondering whether this is closer in style or quality to Blow Out (something I liked) or Domino (not so much).

1. The only thing different with the re-release is it came with a Digital Code I think.

2. I haven't heard any rumors but, with the stuff that comes out on 4K UHD now I wouldn't be surprised. And I would buy it instantly.

3. I think the reason it was panned was because it's just not a totally original movie, but that doesn't mean it's not a good Film by any means. The critics have always kind of had it out for Brian. Snake Eyes is much more similar in quality/style to Blow Out and would even make a great double feature. I don't even think De Palma was involved with the editing process for Domino.

The opening shot in Snake Eyes is one of De Palma's best, and Nicolas Cage gives a great performance. I've always loved the movie.

It's one of my all favourite movies. Both releases have the same picture quality - I would love a 4K release although I have heard nothing to suggest one is coming. It's definitely got a more modern feel to it than Blow Out but it's nothing like Domino (thankfully). It's more akin to Femme Fatale somewhat. The score is wonderful.

I am really hoping that Shout Factory or someone pick this up and include the original ending that was nixed by test audiences. As I understand it ILM completed all the effects work for
[Show spoiler] the wave to hit the stadium
so it would hopefully just be a case of someone finding the footage (this isn't really a spoiler btw). The ending song would make a lot more sense with the original ending.

Yup! And you can see some of that footage in the awesome documentary about De Palma Noah Baumbach made. Which is essential for any fan imo.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Brian De Palma's Snake Eyes. Maybe we can get a 4K either from Paramount, or they can license it out to someone. I wonder if the tidal wave ending that was changed after they had test screenings for this actually had completed effects, maybe they could either add it as a bonus, or if there's actual good quality elements for it they could actually seamless branch it if De Palma gave them his blessing.

Whenever you see a drop in price on a hit movie blu-ray below $10 it always has a 4k around the corner.

Snakes Eyes is a good film, but I wish Brian De Palma had gone as hardcore into his style as he did in Blow Out, Body Double, or even those iconic, suspenseful scenes in Mission: Impossible. There's some inspired cinematography, but not enough really edge-of-your-seat compositions and juxtapositions. Cage is great in this, and makes the film compelling as this dicey police detective tries to unravel a murder conspiracy in a single night. It has a good energy to it.

If it gets a 4K, I'd put money on Kino Lorber. They've been putting out a lot of Paramount catalog titles to great acclaim. I would hope some substantial bonus material would be produced for such a release. Even De Palma said very little about it in that documentary from Noah Baumbach.

I finally picked this up, really needs a remaster, either that or i'm too used to 4k watching. Anyway, Code below, don't know if it has expired or not, has a May 2023 date on it.

P26TRC9A70CLV029

If it doesn't work try the 0 letter as opposed to 0 Number.
