I was wondering why there was no RIP Gilbert G thread then I realized it's here in this embarrassing garbage of a forum full of creepy stalkers of actresses.

I mostly knew Gilbert from Aladdin and Beverly Hills Cop II, but he seemed like a really nice man. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Gilbert's podcast was awesome if you loved old tv and movies. He had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of both. He could sing the theme song of some obscure 60s tv show at the drop of a hat and do impersonations of character actors that no one remembers. He also reveled in talking about all the sexual shenanigans of old hollywood, like what trained monkeys were used for back in the day and Caesar Romero's love of orange wedges.
One of his greatest moments was at the Hefner roast when he told a 9/11 joke and the crowd turned on him and starting booing and Gilberts response was to do the filthiest and most disgusting version of the Aristocrats joke ever, which I believe you can hear in that documentary. He was also great on the Stern show. The days when he sat in on the news at the end of the show and just riffed on what was going on were gold. My all time fave Stern show moment was Gilbert harassing Amy Heckerling's nanny or assistant. Heckerling had just directed Gilbert in a film and had hung out at her house and really got under this woman's skin and they got her to call into the show. |

I first saw Gilbert in Aladdin or Problem Child. His podcast is one of my favorite things about Mondays. It's irreverent and not for everyone, but it was funny, touching, and I'm not sure how Mondays will be knowing there won't be more episodes.
There's a documentary that came out in 2017 that's just a whole other side to Gilbert. I highly recommend seeking it out. I cried and when I saw him at Carolines in NYC, my girlfriend told him that. He replied, in such a quiet way, "That's nice. Thank you." I'll miss him. |
