Default Major Cover Art Annoyance

Is anyone else annoyed by certain studios (i.e. Buena Vista, mostly) releasing their films on Blu-ray with cropped/shortened cover art like the below examples? I just don't understand why they decided to go with this as stylistically it certainly isn't appealing and I like to have the full art fill out the entire front of the packaging.

I just don't get it.

I am not bothered at all.

You will be happy to know that Beuna Vista/Disney stopped doing this on new releases. Lionsgate still does it though.

Default The little swoosh

Actually they do that to try and help distinguish the difference between the dvd and the Blu-ray edition of the movie. They did something similar on original dvd's back in 97 - 98. I agree, I don't like it, but give it time, it'll filter away

I wish Lionsgate would stop doing it on theirs. I didn't mind the Disney swoosh at all but I hate the lionsgate chopped line

Don't mind it that much. Would be better if they did it in a slipcase and had regular art in the case. But then they might up the prices on those. It will go away all together eventually

Ahhh, the 'swoosh'. Depends on the title. That one for The Queen is a ****ing monstrosity!

Don't see whats wrong with these, I have seen some much worse dvd covers that I totaly hate like the james bond artwork..... that mgm have releasd both the "ultimate ed" and the "special ed" of the james bond films.

So when bond gets on blu-ray then I hope mgm uses the orginal artwork.

Yeah, I hate Das Swoosh.

It cries out "Hey, this is a gimmick format! Gamers & kids, see here!"

It's not really designed for a mature film fan.

Then again, Disney has abandoned it on their new releases, and the only BD studio that still insists on it is Lionsgate. Compare that to Universal on HD DVD, and their boneheaded insistence on an even more intrusive swoosh, and we should consider ourselves lucky.

(I must add that a swoosh has never prevented me from buying a title, but hopefully this sort of nonsense will be just a curiosity from 2007...)

I simply cannot stand the "swoosh" garbage on those Buena Vista BD cases. The logo spam crops into the movie poster art and actually does more to cheapen the overall look of the product rather than do anything to improve it.

The only legitimate argument I see to justify this kind of packaging which screams out "THIS IS A BD DISC" is that it does more to keep standard DVD customers from buying the disc by accident. However, according to what I've witnessed at my favorite local video rental store, the package treatments make little difference. People rent the discs by mistake regardless of the overly loud Blu-Ray logo spammage all over the covers.

The one I hate is when they put the 3 floating heads and the corresponding name below each one, but there's always one that has the wrong name attached to it. Why can't they get it right?

I actually love those. I like the silver shine. Adds to a sometimes boring cover.

They are already getting away from it. Keep in mind, not only did they have to distinguish from DVD, but also from that other confusing pseudo format.

I get annoyed. There is one more future Disney release that has it. It's so ugly. As a designer, I'm very big on cover art.

I think that is why Disney has the Box sleeve... so they can still have a presentable cover art.

Well, the marketing consultants decided this would be appealing to the consumer, so there must be something wrong with you.
