Default Symptoms (1974) Mondo blu ray

I'm surprised to see that no one has started a thread regarding Mondo Macabro's 2016 blu ray release of Symptoms (1974). It's a bit of an unsung gem, a beautifully-filmed, atmospheric British slow-burn pre-slasher/psychological horror, with a terrific isolated setting on a small English country estate, and starring none other than Angela Pleasence, the daughter of Donald Pleasance. It starts and carries primarily as a slightly tense psychological drama, building a sense of unease and leaving the viewer uncomfortably in the dark as to who the characters are, what they're doing, and why, inclusive of an awkward, uncertain sexual tension between the characters that heightens the increasingly odd goings-on. Late in the second act, the slasher angle rears its head, in an almost Hitchcockian fashion, and things are decidedly downhill from there, for a number of our fine cast, in a good way.

This feature is intelligently filmed, classy, well-scripted, perfectly acted, and Mondo's transfer is truly excellent. I think it's also worth noting that the second pressing of this disc is on sale at DeepDiscount right now for about $16, which is just about the cheapest I've seen it since its release about 5+ years ago. If you're a fan of 70's slow-burn suspense horror that pushed the door open for the late-70's slasher genre, especially British works of this period, then Symptoms is a very worthy addition, or at least warrants checking out.

It does get praise regularly in the MM thread. And yes, it's great. One of my favorites from them.

I have the BFI version and am quite pleased with it. Great interview with Angela Pleasence.

Im surprised myself that this has not captured a few more peoples interest in the movie. Its well made. The cinematography as well as the colors are stunning! Many of the outdoor scenes are so well shot. Especially when both main actresses are boating in the lake with the sun rays hitting the lens. SUPERB!
