(Jean Rollin, 1970)
Release date: 23 April 2024
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

Jean Rollin’s second feature film, and his first in colour, The Nude Vampire (La Vampire nue) finds the master of the fantastique combining his trademark erotic-vampire themes with an homage to the mystery serials of his youth.

When Pierre (Olivier Martin), the son of a wealthy industrialist, witnesses a beautiful woman (Caroline Cartier) being pursued and captured by men in bizarre masks, he decides to investigate, uncovering a sinister vampire cult...

Starring Caroline Cartier (Lumière), veteran French character actors Bernard Musson (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie) and Paul Bisciglia (The Demoniacs), Lettrist artist Maurice Lemaître (co-writer of Rollin’s The Iron Rose), and Rollin regulars Olivier Martin (The Rape of the Vampire) and twins Cathy and Marie-Pierre Castel (Lips of Blood), The Nude Vampire is one of Jean Rollin’s most eccentric and effective works.

Man alive, that cover art is utterly sensational. I mean, it really is exquisite!

By the great Phillipe Druillet, a trully visionary bande dessinée artist/creator of the Lone Sloane character.

Very popular in the 80s and has fallen a bit out of favour since. Also painted the posters for Rollin's Rape and Shiver. More mainstream commissions include posters Annaud's Quest for fire and Name of the rose.

Also appeared as an extra in Le Viol (one of the angry villagers in the opening scene).

Since you liked this poster, his comics are really recommended, especially from a visual standpoint.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippe_Druillet

Also, the poster for Levres de sang is by Phillippe Caza, another BD towering figure.

EDIT. By the way, Indicator should have probably kept the original Druillet posters (including titles) intact for the respective 3 covers. The overall compositions seem lacking, especially in the case of Viol, without the original lettering and surrounding frame in place. My only (minor) graphical "complaint" regarding these excellent releases..

Real interesting information here, Gekats. Thanks. You always take time and care with your informative posts. Druillet's comic art is really something; that 'Lone Sloan' stuff is fantastic(al).

Hey, Brian! Is there a reason why we are stopping at spine #417? What is the closest announced Indicator spine following that one?

That is simply the latest numbered title that has either been released or announced. Nothing more nothing less.

I haven't looked at other Indicator release numbers that follow these.

I am hoping it extends to include titles like Night of the Horlanges which hasn't received a BD release. Those should be after 417 if the chronological pattern continues to hold.

The cover art is sensational. I feel like I've watched the film again just by looking it over, and yet, there's not a spoiler image to be found, either.

Imagine, working at a classy label like Powerhouse, where your boss DOESN’T tell you to hurry up and have the art dep’t whip up “another floating head photoshop cartoon montage” for the next cover art set…..Just look how the possibilities open up. Are we paying attention, dixnee, shart factory, et al?

Most of Indicator’s Rollin’s covers, including Nude Vampire, are of the film’s theatrical poster. The artwork is indeed beautiful! The artwork on this release is from the French movie poster.

I don’t think Two Orphan Vampires ever really received a cool theatrical poster in the vein of his earlier films so they just went with a movie still.

Two Orphan Vampires had a rather poor theatrical poster. I imagine that is why they didn't use it. Even if they had, it wouldn't have matched the style of the earlier releases.

When in fact, she was a gainfully employed adult film actress, and couldn't afford NOT to take her clothes off Truth is stranger than fiction.
