Help,
I currently have my PS3 wired via hdmi direct to my tv, it seems the audio and video are going through this, i also have an optical cable plugged into the ps3 to my sony htfs1100 surround amp but i dont think this is doing anything as when i unplug it i lose no sound nor gain any when i plug it back in, anyway on the ps3 settings i have set it hdmi and then automatic, this only gives the recommend linear pcm 44.1 and linear pcm 48khz. However when i have looked by doing this manually it obviously gives a long list of pcm linear outputs lots of 5.1 and 7.1's aswell, surely these should be coming up on the automatic list when i select hdmi, or do i need to select some of these manually from the list and if so which ones there are loads, i am really stuck, as i am new to surround sound , it does appear that i am getting some sort of surround from the speakers with the settings i have at the moment, but i have no idea if this is correct. |

In order to get surround sound via HDMI you must connect it to a HDMI receiver. If you want surround sound coming out of your receiver with optical, you must set the ps3 to audio setting optical output.

Agreed, at the moment though if i plug the hdmi into the amp and then from amp to tv i get nothing at all, sound or video.
at the moment, the reason i am getting surround from the ps3 is because the tv and surround amp are connected via coaxial cable. |

Well if you are getting surround sound via the tv then it is only logical that you only get dd and dts 5.1 and 2 ch pcm.
If you want pcm 5.1 and DDtruHD you must conect it to your receiver. I don't know if your receiver accepts audio via the HMDI, i could be that it is only a video switch. So that it can only transmit a video signal to your tv. If your receiver accepts audio with hdmi input, you must set your ps3 to audio output to hdmi. In your receiver you must switch the hdmi inputs on. And put another hdmi cable from your receiver to the tv. And set the ps3 display to hdmi output. (i did the same with my onkyo 705) If it does not accept hdmi audio connect your ps3 with hdmi to your tv and optical to the receiver. and set the ps3 to audio opitcal out, and display hdmi out. Hope this helps |

ah i suppose this will not matter if i eventually run the sound through an optical cable, but at the moment in ps3 sound settings, when you select hdmi as output, then it asks if you want automatic settings of manual,
when you select automatic it gives you only linear pcm 2ch 44.1khz and also linear pcm 2ch 48 khz, but if you choose hdmi then manual it gives you a large tick list of freqs and others for 5.1 and 7.1 aswell, if you have knowledge of these, surely i should be ticking some of these off as well, but which ones if so. |

you can only get pcm 5.1 or 7.1 with a hdmi cable and a receiver that accepts 5.1 or 7.1 pcm via hdmi. And the receiver must have a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 output.
You can only get dd 5.1, dts 5.1 and 2ch pcm with optical. i set my ps3 to automatic. but if you want it set on manual you must consider the facts i wrote above. Olso consider that your receiver must be capable of receiving more than 48hz. My old Harman avr 330 did not accept sound with a higher hz then 48hz. hopes this awners your question |

ow before i forget, Hdmi olso accepts dd5.1 and dts 5.1 like optical.
but optical wil not accept pcm 5.1/7.1 and dtsHDmaster and ddtruHD witch hdmi will. |
