A friend of mine brought this to my attention. GKids through Fathom Events is going to be screening 6 Hayao Miyazaki films in theaters both dubbed and subbed once a month from June till November:
https://www.fathomevents.com/series/studio-ghibli-fest Certain Cinemark and Regal locations are offering Series Passes: $60 for all six movies plus a Nausicaa poster for Cinemark and a 35mm Spirited Away cell for Regal. I'll type out the schedule if it makes it easier to reference everything at once: My Neighbor Totoro: June 25th (Dubbed), June 26th (Subbed) Kiki's Delivery Service: July 23rd (Dubbed), July 24th (Subbed) Castle in the Sky: August 27th (Dubbed), August 28th (Subbed) Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind: September 24th (Dubbed), September 25th (Subbed) Spirited Away: October 29th (Dubbed), October 30th (Subbed) Howl's Moving Castle: November 26th (Dubbed), November 27th (Subbed) For those of you in the Miami area, Coral Gables Art Cinema is also going to be showing Ponyo August 13th with subtitles separate from this festival. I'll be checking out all 7 films for sure. Now I'm kicking myself harder for missing Fathom's Princess Mononoke screening a few months ago. Had I gone to that, the only theatrical Miyazaki experiences I'd be missing by the end of the year would be Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises (well, and Castle of Cagliostro, too). Hopefully Coral Gables Art Cinema acquires the rest of those independently like they did with Ponyo. I'm most excited for Kiki's Delivery Service. It's my favorite non-Disney/Pixar animated film of all time and is probably going to be the only one where I watch both the dubbed and subbed versions theatrically. |

Saw My Neighbor Totoro yesterday (first time). Absolutely loved it. The only other Ghibli/anime movie I've seen in theaters is Arriety. I ordered a ticket for Kiki's Delivery Service for next month.

Ghiblifest is back for 2018 with this lineup:
https://www.fathomevents.com/series/studio-ghibli-fest Fascinatingly, it includes Grave of the Fireflies. Maybe GKids was able to acquire it after all? Either way, I'm glad to see this is continuing since (like in my post from last year) I still need Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, and The Wind Rises to complete my theatrical Miyazaki experience (maybe Wind Rises will come next year if GKids gets a hold of it?). I'll probably check out the others, too, though I'm not sure I really want to revisit Grave of the Fireflies. |
