Four movies from director Lukas Moodysson will be released on Blu-ray by SF Studios in august 2021. ”****ing Åmål”, ”Tillsammans”, ”Lilja 4 ever” and ”Vi är bäst” (re-release). This is great news. I’ve been waiting for them to give us more Swedish and Nordic movies on Blu-ray. They are sitting on a vast library and I wish they would do more frequent releases.

Was hoping some international boutique label would acquire the rights for these, because you know SF will give it minimum effort, probably with zero extras. But at least they have priced them accordingly and I'm glad they are finally released.

These are apparently part of new line called the Memfis Film Collection. Also on the way: Zozo, Farväl Falkenberg and Den Bästa Sommaren with hopefully more to come.
It’s a bit weird that according to the back covers at least some of these will be 1080i instead of 1080p. Have sent an e-mail to SF and asked about this. |

Looks like 25fps, the runtimes are 4% shorter.

Quite the opposite actually. Many Swedish films are restored by the Swedish Film Institute which are financed by the government. Once a film is finished, the copyright holder can get the finished master (or raw scans) for just a small handeling fee. Their restoration process is very good and stay very true to the creator's intent.
Basically these films have been restored without Memfis or SF Studios paying a single penny. Tillsammans is even restored in 4K. It is however strange that they are supposedly stored in 1080/25PsF. SF Studios released all of Åberg's films in 1080/24p. |

It’s a little bit strange indeed. Could it be that these are HD masters made for Television that they now release on disc? I bet they will still look good and much better than the old DVD’s, but it’s a shame if they could have been made to look even better.

Just watched ****ing Åmål / Show Me Love. Even though it is 1080i and 25 fps, it is still a big upgrade over the old DVD. Far from perfect but that could be a limitation of the source.

Got all of them except Vi är bäst and tried them out tonight. As previously stated they're all in 1080/25PsF.
There's a lot to say about ****ing Åmål in a technical standpoint. The film was shot on reversal Super 16 and cross-developed as ECN-2. This set the base tone to the entire film with a very gritty, often yellowish look. Also the film is essentially shot in non-ideal conditions on purpose and often use zooms without compensating the aperture for the exposure, making it a mixed bag. I remember talking to its colorist (Tomas Barkenäs) and he was pretty surprised just how much work went into the color timing when it was originally made. It should be noted that SFI made two separate masters from the restoration, one of which was done for DCP with all grain intact and the other for streaming which had far more noise reduction to circumvent compression artifacts. This kind of makes sense as some streaming services may have encoding algorithms that are far from optimized for cross-developed 16mm but on Blu-Ray it should fare better. Only problem is... They used the DNR'd master here. I saw the DCP when it premiered back in 2017 and it looked glorious. Now grain is still apparent and detail as well, but the grain structure looks kind of like syrup. It changes slowly and gives a smeary look. Considering tho how bad the DVDs were, this is still a major upgrade but still flawed and a disappoitment to me. While ****ing Åmål may fare a bit short, Tillsammans looks overall fantastic. As mentioned earlier it was scanned and restored in 4K, and it shows. Sharpness is excellent and color grading just wonderful. It always have great contrast and show good shadow detail. Optical effects are common but still look decent, just a little bit softer. Grain is present throughout the film and is very fine too. My only complain is that some scenes had some encoding artifacts, especially visible on the red walls in opening scene, but I believe it's partly due to the video being interlaced. Lilja 4-Ever also looks very good, just not as striking as Tillsammans. Detail and textures are always present. Grain is fine and color grading is very suited for the film (mostly muted, greyish tones). Didn't find the encoding to be annoying neither so that's welcome. In one scene however (when Lilja dreams about the boy) I saw some very obvious ringing but again this seemed to have been a scene with an optical effect of some sort so it's most likely baked into the source elements. Regardless I do overall find these to be solid releases in terms of their video quality despite ****ing Åmål not living up to my expectations. It is a big improvement nonetheless, but it's hard for me to see it as anything but a lost cause. Tillsammans is still my favorite of his films and I was very happy to see it in a very respectable presentation. Lack of extras may put some people off, but prices considered they're worth it if you find the films to be interesting. |

I’m hoping that Arrow is working on a release of these films… their big calendar of clues had an “LM boxset” set for the summer when it was first posted, which never materialized and was absent from a subsequent iteration of the list. I asked about it on Twitter and they said the “LM box” has been delayed.
If the “LM” is indeed for Lukas Moodysson, I wonder if that would be a chance to correct some of these issues? Slowing them down to 24fps would theoretically be possible (….right?) Could that explain the delay? And I’m sure they’d rather release the DCP master for F*cking Åmål if given the choice; I just hope whoever would be providing the masters would know to present that option, since I have no idea if preparing multiple masters with different grain treatments is common enough that a third party label would know to ask as a matter of course. |

I don't think SFI have otherwise ever made two individual masters from the same restoration so this is a very rare bird indeed. Either way I doubt that Arrow would tolerate the DNR of the distribution master. All of them are originally restored at 24fps so it's SF Studios that made the PAL speedup, thus Arrow wouldn't have any problems releasing them at 24/23.976p.
This is all, of course, if Arrow is indeed planning to release a Lukas Moodysson box set. Seems a bit out of place imho but still welcome. |

Right — certainly a long shot and I’m sure it’s more likely someone like Lucky McKee, if the initials are even a person’s name — but the timely appearance of these new restorations made me hopeful.

Managed to get you some screenshots.
****ing Åmål - Looks really smeary upon further inspection. Also the banding in cap #4 is very apparent. A letdown. Will see if I can dig up the old Sandrews DVD at some point. [Show spoiler] Tillsammans - Overall very good with really fine detail and grading. No DNR whatsoever and acceptable encode. Some CUE may occur due to the interlaced video but still a really nice release. [Show spoiler] Could probably get some caps from Lilja 4-Ever. |
