Default Pinholes on the read side of the disc - Damaged disc?

I just received a TV DVD set and the first disc has multiple (at least 6) pinholes on the read side. I'm assuming this is a bad thing. Can I expect playback errors?

I haven't had a chance to check all the episodes yet. Would you request an exchange?

I would return it ASAP claiming it as a defective disc without playing it because it may get gradually worse. Where did you get it?

If you have the means to do so, you could try ripping the disc (or even just simulate it) to see if you get any read errors. But if it were me, I'd probably go ahead and exchange it, either way.

I got it from Gruv. It's the first disc of The Munsters Complete Series.

I ripped MKVs without errors, but I haven't watched them. I'm assuming there can still be moments where the screen gets pixelated where the pinholes occurred on the track.

Is there software to check for disc errors?

You could try something like VSO Inspector (which I think I might have used in a computer forensics lab once) or Ariolic Disc Scanner. I believe both are free.

Personally, I wouldn't even bother waste the time checking for disc errors because time is valuable. It's apparent that the disc is defected with visible anomalies that may cause playability issues. Just return it for an exchange. If Gruv doesn't have any more copies, then get a refund and rebuy it from another retailer.

It's hard to tell where the pinholes exist without inspecting the disc in person. If the pinholes are in the data layer(s) then the laser would not properly reflect back to the detector and any reasonable program would return an uncorrectable read error. Assuming that you've used a reasonable program, these pinholes are cosmetic.
