Default Death Stranding - Kojima Productions

‘Death Stranding’ Film Adaptation in the Works From Kojima Productions

Another massively popular video game is getting the big-screen treatment. This time, it’s Hideo Kojima’s action game “Death Stranding.”

Kojima Productions has partnered with Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce the film, based on the 2019 video game from Kojima. This will be the first feature from Kojima Productions, and it will introduce new elements and characters into the “Death Stranding” world.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Kojima. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing ‘Death Stranding’ to the big screen.”

The original game “challenges players to reconnect a fractured society after the cataclysmic ‘Death Stranding’ event. This has opened a doorway between the living and the dead, leading to creatures from the afterlife roaming the fallen world marred by a desolate society. Carrying the disconnected remnants of humanity’s future in his hands, players embody Sam Bridges as he embarks on a mission to deliver hope to humanity by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America.” It featured an all-star cast with Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro and Margaret Qualley.

Last week, Kojima announced that a “Death Stranding 2” game was in development at the 2022 Video Game Awards.

Much prefer Elephant Stranding.

(Granted, I think Gus Van Saint’s Gerry would count as the first Strand-type movie)

But to be serious, I love Death Stranding and the concept and world would be incredible for a movie. That said I’ll only really believe it once it begins rolling, Kojima’s stuff isn’t the easiest to adapt and we’re still waiting on that Metal Gear Solid movie with Oscar Issacs to come about.

I feel like it worked so well as a game that a movie would miss that experience.

MGS on the other hand sound interesting to me. But Vogt Roberts has been silent for a while. Not sure if he's busy on Gundam or if there's something cancel worthy brewing.

I have absolutely no bloody idea of how they're going to adapt a game THAT idiosyncratic, particular and massive as Death Stranding is. Like, how??????

Honestly out of all the video games that could be adapted into a film, DS seems a bit pointless considering it's already massively cinematic. I doubt they can top the cast of the actual game, and getting everyone back just to shoot the game again in live action would seem redundant. Even if they did is there any chance of the game's story translating successfully to the screen? I struggled to follow the plot in the 50hrs or so it took to finish the game so I can't see it adapting to feature-length without some major dumbing down. I'll believe it when I see it.

Kind of surprising that Sony isn't involved with it.

From the sounds of it, the producer on the film said compared to other video game adaptations, this will be more esoteric and grounded -- and featuring new characters within the world.

This will probably be a mid-budgeted film with a self-contained story within the world.

The biggest appeal to me was the producer straight up saying this will be a film where artistic freedom will be front and center.

Definitely excited to see what comes of this.

Also not looking forward to someone trying to adapt this game to the big screen. I'm all for video game movies but some deserve to stay as a game. This is one of those.

As happy as this news makes me, I'm also somewhat cautious.

Part of the game's appeal is the connections you build by growing the network (the "UPS walking simulator" if you will). Obviously a film can't encompass most of this due to time constraints, so I'm curious how it'll translate.

If Kojima himself is directly involved with this then I have full confidence that it'll be a success, even if deviations may have to be made.

I could see that working somehow.

Doesn't sound like it'll be like the game. But something else in that same world possibly.

My gut reaction is that DS is DS cuz of the characters but I'm hopeful for this. I love Kojima's work but I almost can't imagine this thing to work just cuz of what it is.

To save you the hour, there’s no story, actors or directors attached yet. That’s the update.

Each time I play MGSV but mostly Death Stranding (didn't finish that one yet and haven't played it in years), I feel like I'm watching a movie instead of playing a video game half the time. Which makes me think Kojima really wants to make movies more than video games. In that way, it's great to see one of his films but Hideo Kojima must be the director IMO. He's 60 so now is the time to start making movies.

Even as he is deep in post-production on his next film Death of Robin Hood at A24, Michael Sarnoski and the studio are already eyeballing their next project together as sources tell Deadline Sarnoski will write and direct the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s genre-defying video game, Death Stranding, with A24 and Kojima Productions producing. The film will delve into the mysteries surrounding the “Death Stranding” – a catastrophic series of events that blurred the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead, bringing forth nightmarish creatures into a fragmented world on the brink of collapse.

Death Stranding captured the imaginations of millions of players, reaching over 19 million players worldwide. Originally launched on Nov. 8, 2019 for PlayStation 4, the game boasts an all-star cast, including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. Players assume the role of Sam Porter Bridges, a character tasked with reuniting a divided America, rebuilding hope, and re-establishing connections among the last remnants of humanity.

The news follows hot on the heels of a number of Kojima Productions announcements at SXSW including new game Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launch date (June 26th, 2025), debuting a brand new trailer, confirming a world-wide concert tour based on the franchise, as well as a collaboration with luxury watchmaker Hamilton; full product details can be found here. This games sees the return of Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Troy Baker who will be joined by Luca Marinelli, George Miller, and Elle Fanning.

The project gives the writer-director another high-profile IP to add to his resume after his critically-acclaimed breakout pic Pig. The film featured Nicolas Cage giving one of his most critically acclaimed performances of his career and put Sarnoski on the map as a rising star in the director ranks. The project also landed Sarnoski the high-profile A Quiet Place spin-off, A Quiet Place: Day One. The film bowed this past summer grossing more then $250 million worldwide.

If Sarnoski can lean more on Pig than A Quiet Place: Day One (which is good but no Pig), then I'll prob warm up to this more.

And maybe this is a hot take, but I think they should recast all the roles. Every single one. Keep the games separate from the movie.
