France Untitled Godard Film

Quote:
Speaking to Les Inrockuptibles (with a helpful translation from Richard Brody), when asked if he’s shooting next film, the director answered, “Yes. It will tell the story of a Yellow Vest woman who breaks up with her boyfriend. The theme is inspired by Racine’s Bérénice. The character brings to mind Bérénice when Titus comes back to the State.”

He continues, “It won’t be made just of what you call archival images. There will also be a shoot. I don’t know whether I’ll find what one calls actors. I’d like to film the people one sees on news channels but plunging them into a situation where documentary and fiction blend. I don’t know whether they’ll agree to be filmed in relation to themselves, both in their professional situation and in invented situations. In any case, I have a list. For instance, there’s Natacha Polony. She’s good. But I’d only be interested in filming her if she’d agree to be seen in a moment of fiction.” SOURCE

Every new year Godard's head goes further and further up his own ass.

Write-up by ION Cinema, which included this project on their Most Anticipated Foreign Films list:

Quote:
In April of 2019, the 88-year-old Jean-Luc Godard revealed he was working on his next film, a yet-to-be-titled drama about a Yellow Vest woman who breaks up with her boyfriend, modeled after Racine’s Berenice. The project promises to mark Godard’s return to contemporaneous political topics as well as a form linear narrative, based on the ongoing Yellow Vest grassroots revolutionary political movement calling for economic justice, which began in October of 2018. While many thought Godard’s 2018 title The Image Book, which picked up a Special Palme d’Or in Cannes, would be his swan song, the French icon looks to be surprising prognosticators once again with a project he also describes a hybrid between documentary and fiction and potentially using nonprofessional actors.

While Godard hasn’t revealed any further details other than his work on the project last April, with statements regarding an actual shoot and no personalities/actors yet cast, we’re unsure of where in the process Godard may be. However, should he have completed the shoot sometime in 2019, one assumes he’d be presenting in the Cannes main competition, where both his last projects bowed.

Fascinating. Godard is easily one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite filmmaker. Though I have to admit to not being quite as familiar with his more recent work -- something I'd like to change sometime, in fact. But this does sound interesting.

I've heard of the movement, but I can't say that I actually know a whole lot about it beyond the fundamentals.

Not sure if it pertains to this project, but I found an interesting tidbit on CriterionForum:

Quote:
Per Fabrice Aragno's Facebook page, Godard is apparently at work on a new project and it's to be shot (at least partly) on 35mm. Specifically, his post references a new film project "by you-know-who" and he's asking around about a fast 50mm lens in PL-mount form to fit an Arriflex 235 film camera, as well as accessories.

Would be awesome if Godard did one of these Marvel films.
